What is going on here????

Was driving around and spotted the craziest looking deer I have ever seen! Anyone know what’s going on here?

Could be fluid swelling but I would expect that to gravitate down the legs more than I see here. Best bet would be air under the skin. Used to see it occasionally in horses. Could be the result of an injury to the trachea allowing air to leak out under the skin or more often a wound (wire cut?) in the armpit region that pumps air under the skin as they move around. Looks pretty dramatic but usually not a fatal injury.

Was talking to a biologist and he suggested it may be Ruminal tympany (rumen bloat).

Not! Rumen bloat is very localized and this critter is puffed up all over the torso... also woulda been dead (suffocated) long before it got that blowed up from rumen distention. I'm gonna stick with subcutaneous emphysema (air under the skin).
