Just dropped off a good buddy after a morning hunt. Thought I would swing by the house to see if my bullets showed up from Precision Rifle and they are here!
Old Buck why don't you tell us what's going on in your woods. You said the other day that you stuck one. Well? Do we have to wait until you paint it to hear the story? Just kidding.
I was in Minnesota over the weekend near the border by Spirt Lake, Okoboji. I saw plenty of deer get chased into Iowa by Minnesota slug hunters. Doesn't anyone bow hunt the border when the sweeds are gunning deer?
I had a great night tonight. I was suppose to go to work at 6pm and get off at 2am. Instead I changed my hours to 10pm-6am. This gave me some time to hunt. Well it paid off. I shot my first buck tonight. To make it more enjoyable I shot him from the ground. I never thought my leg's could shake so much and not break. I shot him a whooping 8 yrds. Ya gotta love this sport.
My job keeps getting in the way of my vacation. Having a blast when I'm out there. Will extend my Thanksgiving holidays a bit to make up for having to work every other week.
I think I have every blown opportunity known to man documented this season. But I love a good challenge.
I had planned on hunting Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, didn't happen. It would be nice if I could figure out how to turn things off but if the clients are motivated and I am not there I don't make a living. Maybe one day next week I'll get back out.
all4s,
Fair enough. I finally put down the video camera picked up the bow and let one fly November 10. It was a nice buck, basic 10 point, either a 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 with a split brow and another sticker off the base. A friend grossed him at 168+.
After 30+ days of looking he was the best I could find. The fifth time I saw him and after getting him on tape several times he finally came in range. First grunt set he stopped at 25 yards with the kill zone behind the proverbial tree. I held until he moved, grunted again finally stopping him in the open and made a good shot. He went 145 yards.
With my limited supply of remaining functional brain cells I misplaced my digital camera so we're waiting on slides to come back before I can show you anything.
He is nothing like the youth of Iowa is shooting this year (congratulations to all!) but a nice buck and I am very happy with him. If you make it to the open house he is already on the wall thanks to some fast taxidermy work. Also took a doe that was picking on a button buck.
Due to the open house it will be about a week on the ground before I'm chilling back in a tree thanks to a post-rut open house and a slow painting artist. I'll get a photo up once available.
lxshooter,
Congratulations on that first buck! On the ground makes it extra exciting. Way to go!
