what to do?

hey, just wanting some opinions. the first part of bow season i had deer crawling all over me and right under my stand. now for the past 3 times out i have hardly had anything close, is it just the time of rut? i have had some bucks cruise by about 80 yds away, i have tried grunting, bleating, scents, and nothing evens turns there head. with shotgun approaching i would realy like to put my tag on some antlers, what could i try? or just wait it out & hope for the best?

Other than the obvious plan of putting in as much time as possible, I guess you could try mixing things up a little by hanging a stand...especially if you're seeing them out of range but in somewhat the same area. Last ditch might also be to try a decoy if you haven't yet. May be time to start pulling some rabbits out of the hat. Good luck.

Yeah I've been having the same problem trying to fill my antlerless tag. I went out there today to move a stand to where I had been seeing them at the past few times but chickened out being afraid I would just spook them out of the area.

Let me guess. You have set the same stand in the same tree a lot?If that is the case, the deer have you patterened. You need to move your stand and change your approach to your stand.I never hunt a stand more than 1 or 2 times per week and I always try to get in and out in different directions according to the wind.
The last 5 bucks I have shot were all taken the first time I sat the stand the year.

i only get time to get out 1 or maby 2 times a week so i don't think they could have me patterened, i have only been out about 9 times total this year. between work, kids, wife, there isn't enough time. I would try a decoy if i had one.

If you are saying that you have hunted the same stand 9 times this year, then I would say they are avoiding your stand.

i have no other option other than sitting on a log and hoping for the best. my stand is built on the tree, and i can't afford to buy one. i hunt the stand on sunday evenings only, the rest of the week there is nothing within 1/2 mile of it. i guess i will just eat a tag sandwitch this year.

I have 9 tree stands scattered over 30 miles and I might be eating the same sandwich as you.
Maybe Santa will bring you a tree stand for Christmas.

So there ya go!!! Problem solved!! Buy $1000.00 worth of stands, play hopscotch according to the wind and ......WALA!!!!! Dang!! I probably ain"t gonna be a ...COOL GUY in the Big Buck world if thats what it takes!! Dammit!!!!:moon:

Sitting on the ground can be very productive. You have to deal with less visibility in some situations. I think it gives you the flexibility to move your set up as opposed to being anchored to a tree.

I hunt the same stands alot & shoot big deer out of them except for this year,i had a few chances just could'nt make the shot count,so wether you got 1 stand or 20 you still have a chance.my uncle has 30 stands to my 9 & i have shot bigger deer.of course you have to have big deer in the area for that to happen but everywhere in iowa there is big deer.just keep at it.

I have 40 acres with 4 stands. Stands are at the really only spots to put them. I have read about burning out spots, but if the deer don't stay on your property, and bucks just pass thru, from who knows where, on their way,,then what's the difference? I sat 23 sits, the most ever on my 40, changing for the wind, so no more than a couple times in a row at any given spot. It took 23 sits morn and eve, for 4 or 5 hrs each time, to finally see a mature buck on the 23rd sit.

decided to chicken out and sat in the stand, saw a few pretty close- ended up taking a doe
