I'm going to be in Iowa starting the 9th hopefully. Just wondering if the bucks are still going to be chasing or will they be already locked down then. Also do I need to try a decoy or is it going to be to late for that. Just curious what you guys thought since you hunt this great state yearly.
If I dont make it next week I will be coming the Friday after Thanksgiving and hunting until gun season. Can calling still work then or do I need to hunt food sources . Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
If it makes any difference, I will be in Appanoose County.

Well I have seen multiple 120s and 130s chasing. These past few days we have noticed the big boys starting to join the action. Couple 150s+ following does. Later this week into next week things are going to blow up literally.

I never use decs so no comment there.

If you make it in later. End of nov into dec which will be more like post rut. I would say rattling will be good. I love rattling during post rut. Usually have great success. Food sources will be hot late nov into dec also.

Good luck

Jerrett,

By the 9th..bucks might be chasing they aren't yet in my area and I am one county east of where you will be.I have seen a few buck following does but not chasing them.I have trail cameras out and ALL the pics of bigger buck are at night. The next cold snap should start things going strong.

Thanks for the replies. I wont know for sure when I will be coming until after Friday night. I'm a high school Fball coach and we are in the playoffs. If we lose , Im headed to Iowa, if we win I will wait until day after Thanksgiving to come.
Sounds like late November can still be good. I just dont know anything about hunting that late and the cold weather for a southern boy might be tough!

If I could pick one day it would be the 9th!! I see a lot of chasing then and hunt 2 miles from Lineville, IA so depending on where you hunt, that will give you some idea. They start to lock up pretty quick after that tho.

I looked at the 15 day forecast on accuweather. It is showing warm this weekend and turning colder late next week. If I wait until the 12th and hunt through the 18th or so, do you guys think that will be better to have cold weather or will they all be locked down then.
And how warm does it have to be to stop daytime movement. The weather is looking like 60's this weekend then 50's/30's for most of next week before dropping into the 40's/20/s next weekend. Is 50/30 weather cook enuff or is that to warm for much day activiyt.
Thanks for your help. Im just trying to decide what to do if I get to come next week.

I would not pay much attention past a 3 day forecast IMO. I have taken off vacation over the 15 day and it has never been right yet. :D

when they are chasin they are chasin, the temperature isnt as critical. once we get rid of this moon things should start to heat up. normally in sw ia the lockdown in my opinion doesnt really hit until around the 15th or so. this year i have it good and bad, good bein i used by bow tag on my dream buck on 10/17and dont have to worry about the weather etc, bad bein it kinda sucks i dont get to experience the rut but only to fill doe tags. its great and it sucks. a problem to have i guess, good luck to all and lets see some harvest pics!!!!

Thanks for all the replies. My buddy is already in Iowa an he is seeing some smaller bucks. Today he said he saw a shooter trailing a doe but no shot. He is seeing some nice bucks after dark riding back to town. Hope the weather cooperates for us next week an we hit it just right. I've been waiting 3 years for this trip. Can't wait!
