All the motorized ones are pretty expensive for the good ones. I use the one that attaches to the wifes Kitchenaid mixer. It's inexpensive but the mixer is expensive. If you are just doing 1 deer at a time a good hand crank type works great and you can find them just about anywhere. I've seen the larger ones converted to elec. with good results. A tip for grinding with allmost all grinders is get as much of the silverskin off as you can before grinding as it plugs up the grinder. I've also used a food processor with good results allthough it chops it very fine.

If you're only doing meat for yourself (one or two deer a year), Cabela's has one for just under $100 that works well. I've got the Rival version of that one and it will crank it out plenty fast. (I even bone out the dark meat on my turkeys to make turkey jerky).

If you can go in with some friends, get a bigger grinder or better yet, one of the combination meat bandsaw/grinders available out there. Grizzly sells one fairly cheap and there are other food processing equipment companies that carry a variety of machines.

I am with Shovel Buck. Buy your wife a great kitchenaid mixer and add a $50 grinding attachment. They work pretty good for me. I always grind coarse once, and fine for the second time through.

I'm in the market for an electric one this year. My neighbor and I used a #32 hand grinder last winter, and that was enough for me. By the time I did a coarse grind, then a fine grind, I was starting to wear out. I am shopping the electrics, and will gladly pay a bit more to get one that is powerful enough and well made for the 3 or 4 deer we do each year. It might be even more this year, depending on what my neighbor shoots. We won't have more than 2 at a time, and probably only one - any suggestions on the best motor size ? Thanks !

Thanks for the site, Fitz. Which size of grinder did you get? I see there are #8, #12, #22 and #32 grinders - what is the big difference between these in how they work? Thanks
