What weight boot?

Going to start shopping the after Christmas sales. Never needed a real heavy cold weather boot. What do you think is the minimum Thinsulate gram weight, 800, 1200 2000?? This will be for a Texas guy hunting in late december in southern Iowa who is not used to the cold.

Walking or sitting? Most of us with the seasonal changes here have multiples to match conditions from non insulated to the warmest insulated.

Carry a small Mr. Heater in with you to the blinds and the insulating factor of your boots will not matter all that much. Good luck !!

Do NOT listen to the above advice on 400-800 gram boots! That's just asking for cold feet in about 30 minutes in 10 degree weather! The grams matter but the quality of the boot is more important. I have 2000 gram boots that suck. I would actually recommend a PAC boot for you.

I have muck artic pro boots because I'm prone to cold feet. I'm good to about 10 degrees with two wool socks for about 3 hours.

If you go with a lighter boot I would take the advice on boot blankets.

Another thing is make sure they are over sized accommodate the sock system you plan on using and some additional air space. My rule of thumb for cold weather boots is 2 sizes bigger than my normal shoe size.

Thanks for all the advise I am not used to extreme cold. I can hang for a long time in the cold until my feet get cold then I am done.

I have found several pac boots, however there don't seem to be gram ratings on them. Is the insulation on a pac boot rated different?

Personally, I went with 800gr LaCrosse. Like Central Iowa, I bought them big (air space to warm and insulate is the key). I used Merino tight socks to wick away and a big pair of wool socks. Does a pretty good job. I do have some boot blankets to put over as well - just make sure you get them for your big boot size and not your normal shoe size. Best wishes! :way:

Gram ratings are for the amount of Thinsulate in boots. Pac boots have removable felt liners. Different stuff. You are getting some good advice from others on here. That said I bought some 2000 gr boots on sale and tried them out in 16 degree weather to see how they would do. My feet were hot everywhere but the bottoms. Never had my feet this cold since I was in grade school and that has been awhile. Going back to my 20 year old pac boots for subzero weather. Also the Hot Hands for your feet work for my grandson's for about 2 hours. I haven't used them.

Frogg Toggs 1200 gram Mossy Oak. I have had Muck and Lacross and these boots fit me better and are much for comfortable. Plus they are 50 bucks cheaper. Very warm but aren't too big and bulky.
