What works best for homemade targets?

For shooting broad-heads and field tips? I've always bought my targets but would like to build a very large target something I can keep in the back-yard without having to worry about it being taken. I’ve heard of compressed cardboard and hay bails are those the two best options but I thought I would get some advice before making one.

You can make a homemade field tip target out of almost anything it seems like... but to me.. i probably wouldn't shoot my broadheads into anything short of a manufactured foam target such as The Block. What I really like using for field tips is a giant white plastic burlap type bag that my dad gets from his work at Pioneer. Shelled corn is shipped in those bags and I think they throw a lot of them away when they are done. Then we take a bunch of plastic wrap that is used to wrap pallets with bagged corn, and stuff it tight into that big bag... The bag is probably about 4x4x4 ft i think. But I know those compressed cardboard bundles will work good too as long as you have an indoor range. The one I make works perfect for outside and Ive had it for about 8 to 10 years and it still works like a charm.

You can also fill the plastic burlap type bags with plastic sacks from anyone of your favorite big box stores. As posted above they work really well.
I have made broadhead targets that work very well also out of cardboard. I put a 2 x 6 on top and bottom with threadstock drilled through each end then nuts on both ends. Tighten down well and they will stop anything. That being said they pull hard and I have got broadheads (w/insert) stuck in them. So I just buy a new cheapy ($15) walmart foam target every other year for my broadhead practice.

We used to use a clean dirt pile (no rock and things) to shoot in. Keep it covered with a tarp and loosen it up with a shovel or something.

A piece of old carpet actually works well as a back stop. I like the plastic burlap seed bags too, cheap and can be left out in all weather !

For $35-$50 you can buy a portable field tip / broadhead target that will last quite awhile. That would be my advice before spending a bunch of time trying to construct one that will probably be more of a pain in the ass than anything.

I just received a yellow jacket broadhead target from Boyd at Buck Hollow that is slick. Anxious to try and destroy. it.

yup, too easy to buy a quality target, than to go through the hassle of making one. get a delta bag target for field tips, and a makenzie shot blocker for broadheads
