Probably would be a snare wound.

Sure looks like it but how the heck did he survive it?

Thats what I was thinkin, never had one get loose when he was that deep in the snare, but I bet thats what caused it.

I never really thought of it as a fighting wound, but thats a good possibility. A couple years ago we did kill one that was running around with a twisted off snare around his neck, which kind of made it a mercy killing. Hard to say on this one.

I shot one a month ago that looked exactly like that. Had a snare around his neck. It was nasty but they are survivors. We had a foot or two of snow on the ground at the time and he was still making it around.

Breeding season and fighting for a mate would be my guess.

Never thought of that, only reason I thought of snare is he has kinda a "coller" look to him.

A couple years back i watched my dad sneak on a pair of fox and shot em both. The female had a snare still around her neck twisted off. She was small enopugh that it didnt even hurt her at all. After we pulled it off her fur looked perfect. I guess I would do anything I could to fight my way out of a noose too.
