Best to plant in a rotation, in the fall after clover, or,,into the clover.? Rye was first,,now it is clover ,in it's second yr, and kind of dieing out. It is a small spot. No equip, I'll probably hoe it up. Thanks.
 
Spray and broadast a rye/brassica mix on top and dress with some nitrogen fertilizer ahead of 1/2 inch rain.
 
Thanks,,No Hoeing up the old clover? Just Round-up down and broadcast ? Also,,what kinda Brassica? I used to think Brassica was a particular plant. Now, I know it includes many types. Thanks again.
 
If you can till the clover under, all the better for organic matter and added nitrogen. I am trying some forage radishes this year, but rape has worked well for me in the past. Could never get the deer to eat turnips. Some areas they tear them up tho, seems that if they are planted more than one year, deer start to like them later in the year.
 
Have to do my tilling with a hoe, but hopefully will be less humid by the first of Sept. So Rape is good. I have heard that about Turnips, but deer like Rape,,for Fall? thanks for the tips.
 
Check the brassica thread in dbltree's corner Ed...I always mix rape and turnips and both work well for overseeding.

Right now is the time to plant them though....spray the sod and just sow it right into the killed sod. Clover might be tough to kill with roundup though so nuke it hard!

If you get rain it will do fine if not...then hoeing it up might have been better.

Don't worry about those chiggars...the bites will only cause misery for a day or two....:D
 
Thanks,, I know well about the chiggers. I have a few each time I go out into the field. Didn't think you could just throw the seed into the dead clover like frost seeding though.Round-up takes about a week to work. I have a crazy work schedule so can't be down on my ground just any time. Hoeing it up might be better,,after the round-up. Wonder why planting so early? Thanks for the advice. You are the food plot experts on here!

Brassicas are 60-90 day crops so if you plant in September they only have about 30 days to grow...they will never achieve and real root or leaf growth planted that late.
