White vs. Infrared Flash

White vs. Infrared Flash, let the battle begin...

I'm in the market for a new camera or two. I started off with a Camtrakker years ago, then it got stolen and I never replaced it.

Anyway, has the white flash issue been settled as to whether it spooks mature deer?

No real battle.....every mature deer reacts differently to a camera flash.

Some will stand around for hours getting flashed, others won't tollerate a second picture.

I have and do run both...

What I would recommend with a flash camera when trying to capture mature buck photos,

is to move it's location often, or have lots of them!

I have been able to watch deer passing by a flash camera right at dark and it seems like most don't react to much other then curiously.

I can see where moving them often would be a good idea though.

If you use a Sony camera i believe the shutter noise alarms more deer than the flash. I use both white flash and IR cams. I am more concerned with people seeing the flash and stealing the cam more than i am of spooking the deer. If you use your cam enough; you will notice many of your daylight pics will be of alarmed animals. Cameras like the Olympus that are always on are silent and don't spook deer. When i build a Sony cam; i open the shutter and unplug the shutter motor while installing the shutter assembly. This makes for a very fast and silent cam that doesn't spook many animals; even if faced head on a trail.

Thank you Ghost!

I've been in SE Kansas for the last 10 years after moving from Wyoming. (I couldn't take the weather anymore.)

I've been on the whitetail trail since the mid 1980's.

If anyone wants to know about the scene in Kansas, let me know!

Three (3) budget busters!!

Any comments or suggestions??? Can I find a lower priced quality IR flash model so I can afford several of them??

Leaf River IR Scouting Camera

Capture black and white still pictures at up to four-megapixel picture quality or choose 3-second to 90-second video clips any time of the day or night using this scouting camera with infrared illumination and built-in viewing screen. The new Early Detection PIR Sensor has five detection zones to trigger the camera just after the deer enters the picture window which almost doubles the time allowed for the camera to capture the picture before the deer leaves and also allows you to get pictures of deer that might not cross the center of the picture. Get very long battery life in the battery save mode, or choose a faster trigger time with a slide switch. Use the Quick Shot mode to capture an even quicker second or third picture before entering the pause time if additional motion is detected such as a buck following a doe down a trail. The internal 16MB memory can hold up to 50 images, and hundreds more can be stored if you add a Compact Flash Card (not included). A TV-Out port lets you look at your images on your TV, or hook the camera up to your computer. If you prefer, view images on the built in 1.6" TFT viewing screen. The powerful infrared LED flash produces extremely clear night images. The unit can be programmed to pause anywhere from 1 to 90 minutes between pictures. Up to three motion activated pictures can be captured before entering the pause time using the quick-shot mode. There's an event counter and battery level indicator, too. Comes in a Mossy Oak® Break-Up™ camo pattern and you also receive a USB cable, RCA cable, steel mounting bracket, steel security bar, mounting strap, photo-editing software and instructional DVD. Requires four D-cell and three C-cell batteries (not included).

Primos® Silent Image Digital Game Camera

As seen on ''The Truth'' TV series. NearVideo™ technology snaps up to 5 frames per second for motion capture clarity that's unmatched. 640x480 monochrome images deliver enhanced low-light and rapid-fire performance. InstaOn™ trigger time is less than 1/10 of a second with a PIR range of up to 100 feet. Takes up to 5,000 images on a 256 MB Compact Flash card (included). Features time lapse surveillance, easy-to-program convenience, and a rugged, shock-resistant weatherproof case with handle. Comes complete with MapView Image Management software, 8 AA batteries, and adjustable bungee cord.

Stealth Cam 5.0 Megapixel Infrared Scouting Camera - STC-IR1

This 5 megapixel infrared scouting camera offers a built-in color LCD TFT screen, full-color daytime images, and black and white night images. A whopping 63 IR emitters illuminate using flash. Plus: 32mb built-in memory, expandable CF card slot that accepts up to 1 GB compact flash card, time and date stamp on still images, adjustable PIR sensor, 3 resolution settings, test mode for easy setup, USB out for PC download and TV out. Programmable to shoot 1-3 images per triggering or a 10-second mpeg video and a 1- to 60-minute time-out between triggering (burst mode). External LCD screen displays image count. Mounting strap, lock plate, and imaging software included.

Re: Three (3) budget busters!!

I have the LR IR. Lower priced, slower speed, works pretty good for my purposes. I put it on a scrape this fall and got alot of good pics.

White Flash Effect on > BIG < Deer

White Flash Effect on > BIG < Deer

Nice pictures of little deer are great. But... I'm more interested in getting pictures of BIG deer that I'm trying to kill.

How many times has anyone taken repeat pictures of a 4 1/2 year old buck??

Little deer may not mind the flash, but how about mature bucks??

Ditto! I dinged a pair of them 4 times in a row just last week. I rarely hang cams in front of my stands anyway.
