we all know that the director loepold and deputy director Boddy hired Bob Garrison has the chief of the dnr.what gets me is the guy is retired from the state pulling down a big pension and has a nursing degree he has no background in wildlife or hunting or fishing and now he is double dipping.last i heard we were in a budgeting crunch?now i am hearing that leopold and boddy are trying to cut the dnr feild officers to 8 hour a day shifts,so what is going to happen when we need something after hours.when do you think the poachers are out doing there dirty work, come on!!i am hearing that senator Black has a bill out that will eliminate these higher positions and will be filled by somebody with a dnr background, you know hunting fishing trapping wildlife trees nature, instead of global warming, nursing, state patrol. any body else hearing about this???

I have heard exactly what you are saying -- I am up in arms about this. I would suggest that everyone contact their Reps. and voice their opinion on the matter. This needs to be done ASAP. I have already done this.

senator Black has been the protector of the trust fund (which is your license money)he was instrumental in getting the fish and wildlife trust fund constitutionally protected,i think he is a little bent!!!!!it is my understanding that these protected trust fund dollars are being utilized by the current administration for funding global warming specialists under the guize of wildlife positions.please contact your legislaters and reps to contact senator Black, he has all the details and can fill them in on what is going on!!!!!!

This is part of it:

There is also something else out there, an Executive Order from the Governor that as I understand it is suggesting contracting out CO duties to the county sheriffs to replace all COs. I haven't found it so at this point I call it a rumor.

Another thing is a bipartisan effort to remove funding for both the Chief of Enforcement and the Assistant Chief. As of a week or so ago these positions were reportedly cut by the legislature. I did see that in print but I can’t find it now either.

Sounds kinda like parts of the DNR are in free fall.

Kinda off the subject,,but another part of the DNR that is in Free Fall is the State Parks. They hire seasonal/parttime help to take care of them. The Parks also get the absolute last of the budget. I have heard that this season, at the park I frequent, there will only be one worker, where there used to be 4 or 5. The place has 16 bathrooms and 500 acres of grass. Iowa State Parks need an entrance fee, to be used just for park operations. Like almost every other State. In MI.,when I left, it was $7. a day, to use. You could get a season pass for cheaper. Like I said,,,kinda off subject.

I have to agree with all the posts above. DNR is in terrible shape, mainly due to lack of leadership.

A lot of the problems can be corrected if we all go to the polls in Nov. and vote for the sustainable funding amendment, which is now called IWill (Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy). Funding for more CO's, parks and just about everything outdoors related.

elkhunter is correct.talking about job creation and reductions,in 1997 the number of field officers was at 82 that number has now diminished to the present low of 64.up at desmoines in the central office they gained at least 8 positions 1 licensing supervisor 1 training coordinator 1 administrative assistant 1 snowmobile/atv coordinator 1 snowmobile/atv planner 1 boating safety coordinator 1 river programs coordinator and 1 shooting sports coordinator.all i know is i miss the days of the conservation commission when we new the money was spent wisely.i am also hearing that the higher ups have removed the requirment to have a background in fish and wildlife for job approval.i would be willing to bet that are deputy director Boddy could not tell the difference between a robin and a tufted titmouse!!!!!!!!!

Just FYI guys, I will be having Senator Black on my radio show coming Monday to discuss this very issue....... I'll put up a post with time and place later this weekend

This is a BIG deal and anyone who even likes to hunt or fish in Iowa needs to take a stand here.....

the issues mentioned above are VERY true and VERY real

IBA and IWTF needs to send out a call to action on this topic, as it could have devastating affects on our hunting and fishing opportunities here in IOWA.....

I have heard that this season, at the park I frequent, there will only be one worker, where there used to be 4 or 5. .

I was at a Muscatine county hunting/fishing forum last weekend where Iowa Representative Nathan Reichert said he wants to propose that if someone joins some kind of group to do volunteer work for an Iowa state park, that if you put in 100 hours of volunteer work, maybe the state could give the person one weekend at Honey Creek Resort at Lake Rathbun.

He wants to challenge the state. Instead of threatening the people of Iowa to close down state parks, he would rather them ask what volunteer work we could do to help keep them open.

He said even with the shortage of people to run the parks, they still had the biggest jump last year in people using the parks. We should find some way to keep them open.

Maybe they could get it done and help keep that part of the state budget down. Sustainable funding would hopefully help out if it gets passed too.

Related to Earthscrather's post. I just saw a job posting for a CO on the IDNR website. No degree required; just a high school diploma. A degree in natural resources or biology should be a requirement IMO.

The park I am close to records vehicles coming and going into the park. Last summer it averaged 30,000 vehicles a month. Even a dollar a car would help.

The DNR has too much power in this state. We should be allowed to elect the person that runs it.

I must agree with the other posters, this is not right. On another subject I recently heard a person say "It is real hard to march to the drummer when the drummer don't know how to drum", and I find that true here.

On the State Parks subject the State runs off a lot of volunteers. For several years a group of 8 or 9 people tried very hard to start and maintain a Friends of Lake Wapello group. The IDNR and some other State agencies increased regulations and insurance requirements to the point where we just could not function. We would hold a couple of fund raisers every year, a pancake breakfast on the free camping weekend and a soup supper and haunted trail at Halloween time, all in the Park with volunteers. All the funds went to purchase equipment for the Park, such as a new pole saw, and fire rings, and beverage can cages, and we hopped to build a fish cleaning station. The State made us obtain outside insurance for these events and eventually the insurance premiums were as much or more money than we took in, so what was the point? I also hosted a Buck Skinner Rendezvous for 10 years at the Park and turned over any profits in the form of buying feed for the Swan program that they were running then. The same thing happened, the required insurance made it unworkable. All of these events brought several thousand people to the Park who might not have other wise been there and at that point the Parks managers were trying to find ways to increase Park visitors. I mowed grass and trimmed weeds in the area of our events and cleaned up after wards but then it got to where I couldn't even do that because of the liabilities involved, so I quite. I know that the DNR personal running the Park welcomed any and all help and they became friends over the years, but they could only do what the higher ups would let them do, which wasn't enough.:thrwrck:

I would support some kind of user fee or volunteer work in lieu of for the State Parks but am not sure how to do it equitable, especially with some of the lower income families who use the parks for family entertainment. I know that the last time a fee was tried that Park usage fell dramatically and there were many complaints. Two years later the fee was dropped and more people started using the Parks more.

A couple bucks wouldn't break anyone. Most spend alot more on the beer they bring. I believe all monies going to the DNR go into a big pool. Even camping revenue. Not so sure about that, but I do know every agency gets funding first,,and the parks get what's left over. I have that on good authority.

I will donate 100 hrs worth of work at a state park for an extra state buck tag :) We definitely got to fight this one. Good post

That's the bottom line. The upper tier of the DNR has been in turmoil for some time now IMO. I hope things change soon with a shift back to sound biology and less to politics and revenue.

JOHN DEERE is correct. The posting for CO, requirement for natural resources was deleted. This action was from the current interim chief, another nonhunting trooper. In addition he has deleted that requirement for the two supervisors positions. Definitely contact your legislators, more importantly contact Leopold. Remebe they work for us!

The DNR has too much power in this state. We should be allowed to elect the person that runs it.

We do elect the DNR Director indirectly. The Governor appoints the Director and the Senate and House of Representatives approve the nominee. The Governor also appoints the members of the DNR Commission (6 year terms) and they too have to be approved by the legislature. So when casting your vote for Governor you are casting your tacit approval for the Director of the DNR as well as the DNR Commission.
Your vote is so much more than a mark on a ballot. But without that mark on the ballot your voice will not be heard.

Do they announce who they would appoint before they may be elected?
