I want to know something....
Is it ANY coincidence & WHY is it that many hunters on here and others out there all:

-Love bow hunting
-Love Ultimate Fighting Challenge
-Are Right Wing Conservatives
-Are Christians
-Enjoy a beer
(The stereotypical, TRUE list, could go on and on and on...)

On the other side of it, maybe you don't fit all of those criteria BUT I'd guess a small % are Liberal, love Art, go to a lot of Gay Pride Parades, are into Islaam and eat a bunch of Tofu burgers! (and that list could go on). I just think it's WEIRD how all my bowhunter buddies find all the other areas in life the same as I do. My buddies who I started being "friends with" solely on the basis of BOW HUNTING- coincidentally were on the same page as me on almost everything else. Any psychologists in the house?!?!?

-You have to be kind of fanatical to bowhunt-Most on here fit that criteria.

-Iowa's the best wrestling state in the country. Alot of Iowans grew up wrestling. If your a fan of wrestling it's easy to be a fan of MMA.

-Gun owners are generally associated with the right wing.

-There just aren't alot of Jews or Muslims in Iowa.

-Beer, again it's Iowa. People need to pass the time somehow.

There's my stab at it.

OK, a gal I once dated had a Master's degree in counseling, so she was totally into the psychology thing. Since these traits all apply to me, I'd have probably been analyzed by her something like this:

"One personality characteristic explains a lot of others. In this instance, we start with the love of beer.

After one, you're feeling warm and happy, and believe in all things spiritual (Christianity).

After two, your thoughts turn slightly more selfish. You EARNED that beer. No one else should take away what you worked for and distribute it to others (Right wing conservative).

Three beers and you start to feel a little feisty. There's no one around to brawl with, so you look for substitutes (UFC).

Another bottle of suds and UFC ends. Realizing you'll never be tough as those dudes, you retire to bed. The next morning you wake up and realize your need for violence has gone unfulfilled. so you grab a bow and head out to inflict harm on innocent, defenseless creatures (bowhunting)."

Never did get along with that old hag /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sleep.gif!

My analysis? We're just Midwestern boys who were raised right /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

The answer is our common sense on all counts except Christianity which is our common faith brought about by midwestern values and quality upbringing.

some things are better left unanswered, a very wise man once said "s**t happens sometimes" i believe his name was forest gump

So you wouldn't share one of your beers with your neighbor? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Other than hunting and wrestling is there anything to do for fun?
Just kidding.

Iowa has produced alot of great wrestlers that have went to MMA.

Because you could throw 90% of our parents in a room and they would have similar beliefs. It's the way we were raised. You’re a product of your environment...

Man.....talk about a flashback...one Sunday years ago I went bowhunting before church one morning, went to have a few beers at a party later that afternoon. I then got into an argument over gun rights, which procedede to a fist/elbo swapping wrestling match. Then drank beer again. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

great post!

you forgot to add these to your well thought out liberal list:

Latte sipping, sushi eating, Prius driving, tree hugging, baby killing, whale saving, climate crisis preaching, affirmative action supporting, socialism loving elitists...

Did I leave anything out? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I got some time to kill, so I'm going to break this down.

1.) Love bow hunting...its the ultimate in adrenaline rush, manly men get jacked up about the thought of an adrenaline rush, and that is what bow hunting brings.
2.) Love ultimate fighting challenge...again, adrenaline rush, you picture yourself in the fight, and get all jacked up. Ultimate fighting is like bow hunting, its you vs. something else, Nature.
3.) Right wing conservative...rush of adrenaline when we hear about all these crazy liberals trying to take our gun rights away from us and tax us to death, makes us want to face of in a UFC ring with them! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
4.) Are Christians...Christianity isn't only about believing in God, its about believing in human values that we all should abide by, this goes with #3, if you're against it, we get jacked up.
5.) Enjoy a beer...I love beer, manly men love beer, all the people that I know that hunt love beer, and they are conservatives, love UFC, and are Christians. See how this is all linked? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I'm going to go have a beer now /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I've had a lot of fun just thinking about this post and have enjoyed the comments.

And then today, for some reason, it hit me. I have a friend that's a total curve-wrecker on this subject!

This guy is a staunch atheist. So politically to the left he'd build a statue to Obama if he could. And UFC? Couldn't even tell you what it stands for! He does, however, enjoy beer.

So we hunt together every fall and totally enjoy ourselves, though we never (or make that, rarely) bring up politics or religion. Its just a kind of understanding we have that never gets in the way of our friendship or our love of bowhunting.

It's a weird deal. I don't mean to wreck Sligh's theory, but it hit me today that this guy makes it all fall apart. Any ideas?

Hunting
Fighting
Beer
And all of Gods beautiful creation...... what more is there?

If you don't like it you're GAY!!!!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I actually typed this while having a beer last night! Not a 12 pack or anything but enjoying a couple and relaxing!

Grasshopper, I totally know what you mean with the exceptions, that's what they are- EXCEPTIONS. That's why I actually think Stereotypes are OFTEN fair- majority of the time they are correct (that's what stereotypes are!!!). It's like me having 9 out of 10 friends who are conservative, christian and hunters BUT I do have a few that are staunch pro-choice liberal city boys that haven't hunted in their lives or maybe a couple who also do hunt- I was with my whacko lefty buddy last night, had a great time!!!! Sounds like we have similar situations /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

there's just some psychology of our personalities and up-bringings that leads us to love these things and it's so weird how similar many of us are. I grew up in the CITY- no one hunted BUT i had this ADD personality of loving outdoors and getting into everything, I used to catch frogs and turtles and just LOVED the outdoors- kind of lead me to hunting. Something "Drew Me In" to all of these elements, I'd say by no coincidence. Interesting

OK, so I guess I’m a curve buster too. I like art, both visual and aural (that would be music), I love sushi, I detest ultra conservatives as much as I detest ultra liberals, love wrestling, MMA, now that’s a tough one. I find it exciting to watch yet the absolute violence is hard for me to watch. Some days I’d rather sip good bourbon, some days I’d rather consume beer.

I was raised in a God fearing Christian home, but over the years my life experiences have lead me to wonder more and more about God, but in a strange way has made me more and more aware of what Christ teaches us about how we should treat our fellow man.

To answer your original question, “why are we this way” to me it is a quixotic mix of genes and life experiences, the “nature vs nurture” argument.

But, I’m at the top of the curve with the rest of you on hunting and in particular bow hunting.
