Wiener Rock Crossing(Finished Picture)

This past weekend I set out on a two hour drive with ten foot of telephone poles sticking out of my rear end (pun intended

)to a farm we luckily managed to acquire this past November. The 30 foot poles were going to be used as a crossing point over the creek to connect both side of the property. What I thought would probably take two days to accomplish, only ended up taking a couple of hours thanks to some cable, an old Massey, and some ingeneous red-neck inginuity.

Although the bridge isn't covered yet, I thought I would show a couple picts of the work in progress. Thanks a bunch to two hard working friends from the S.E. corner of the state. There's no way I could have gotten them in by myself!!

This was the start of the trip. After realizing I was a few thousand pounds overweight, I headed south and hoped like hell no-one would stop me on the way down.

Auggie (The Crane) Wafflehouse was caught in this picture man-handleing the poles. Without his strong back and steady hands, things wouldn't have gotten accomplished.

As you can see in this picture, I stayed on the "tractor" side of the creek and tried to offer my assistance when I could, however I was needed at the helm of the Massey so needless to say I stayed fairly clean and unexhausted.

This last photo is of Ghost(The Engineer) Halstead giving the bridge a final crossing and inspecting it for ATV durability. Without his blueprints and Engineering degree, this bridge might have ended up vertical instead of horizontal.

Thanks again guys for the help, once it's finished I'll post a couple more picts.
Below is the finished picture.....thanks to an old deck my buddy ripped up at a friends house. Hopefully this thing lasts a long time!!!

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

Great story and pics. I'm thinking Ghost walked across before the refreshments were brought out.

And I almost forgot.....Happy birthday.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

Great post, looks like quite the project. I have considered building some bridges like that myself to cross some deep gullies, but hadn't considered telephone poles. Hmmmm.

These are strong enough for ATV's to cross huh? Interesting, nice idea.

I would be curious if the deer would ever walk across such a bridge. I assume you planked it across the two poles? How will you secure the poles to keep them from rolling, etc? How wide is the bridge?

The poles will make it strong enough for ATV's. I haven't planked it yet, but once I do the poles won't be able to move, and they're heavy enough that it isn't going anywhere anyway. My buddy has some scrap 2*4's, 6's, and 10's that I'll cut up into 5 or 6 foot lenghts to span the top. 6 foot will be wide enough for any ATV or Gator.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

I hope it is heavy enough for the big dudes to walk across.

How many you gonna build? There are alot of big ditches on that farm that I really dont like crossing.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

Ive actually built a bridge like this before only we cut down trees and used them. To keep them from moving during high water we dug in to the banks and set the trees in the ground level with the ground. They didnt move a bit. High water after a heavy rain can lift the bridge and turn it down stream if it is not anchored. Just thought i would share some ideas so you didnt have to learn by trial and error.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

We used to have a bridge like that out at the farm but the flood of 93 took it. I have hunted the next 4 farms down the creek and I have never found those poles. They were buried in the dirt and steaked in the ground.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

That is a great idea, I would like to do the same thing. Where can I buy telephone poles around the Des Moines Area?

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

Try calling your local energy provider... probably Mid American in Des Moines and see if they have any used ones. Sometimes they scrap them after they replace them with steel or if a 45' pole should snap say during an ice storm you might be able to get the good half. Otherwise you can buy a new pole off of Baldwin Pole in Ankeny IA. PM me for the number if you'd like.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

You just need a long trailer attached to a fast truck, a chainsaw and the guts of a catburglar!! Don't be a wuss, go get some on your own!

He was probably thinking of selling the copper to pay for the decking boards and the "NO FISHING FROM BRIDGE" signs.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

This is an ad out of this weeks Farm Bureau Spokesman. For sale: 32 - 25ft. telephone poles, very stout. Wheatland 563-374-1395
Don't know what he wants for them, but if someone was looking for some it'd be worth a call.

Re: Wiener Rock Crossing

I've been giving this some thought and I just have to ask..............Why is it called Wiener rock crossing?
