Windy Hunt

Anyone hunting in the wind tomorrow? Gusts of 40 mph expected!
Never hunted with that kind of wind during the rut before. Just curious on what some of you have seen in past years. If it was early season I would say forget it and hunt from the ground in some standing corn. I do know of some folks that have taken some very large deer that way.

I'm second guessing my plans too. I could go into work and save the vacation day for later but I know it can happen at anytime, in any condition. I'll probably be in a stand tomorrow holding on to my hat /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif.

25 and under is a good rule of thumb IMO. I'd save the vacation day if possible.

If they predict it right. It was supposed to be 20 mph winds this afternoon. It was awesome out tonight with bucks chasing like crazy.

I think you're right. Forecast says gusts to 40 mph. I've got the whole week off but might as well go in tomorrow and keep the day for next week. By the long range forecast it looks like next week is gonna be good too......

I was also thinking about going in to work tomorrow and saving a day for next week but I am probably going to end up in a stand down in a bottom somewhere.

Yep went out this morning. Took my climber and just didnt climb very high. I put the decoy out and saw alot of little bucks chasing does and harrassing them. Had one little buck probably a 4 inch spike come in to the decoy all pissed off and ears pinned back. Got some good video of it.

Woke up this monrin a pussed out when I heard the wind. Was only going to be able to hunt a little this mornin, but have the rest of the week off.Last time I hunted winds this strong was a couple of years ago and was trying not to get hit by all the falling branches. Called it quits and went to the bar to watch the hawkeye football game and after the game got in the truck to listen to the post game show and they were talking about the tornados that had just went thru Woodward. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gifThat was the same day they they cleared out the cyclones stadium for the same storm.

Just got back from the tree. Saw a bunch on does and had a 160" 10 pt. bed down with 3 does about 40 yds from me. He was running them kinda hard before there was shooting light but they were all bedded down by 7:15-7:30. Also had a 1.5 yr old buck bed down at 60 yds the other direction at about 7:00. It just didn't seem like they were wanting to run the does very hard.

I had to work today, but was surprised to look out the sliding door and see a 130" buck work a scrape behind the pond at 7:00 this morning. The wind didn't effect him standing in broad daylight 100 yds from my house. They are getting dumber by the minute. COME ON VACATION!!!!!!

My youngest boy and I went out after he got home from school. The wind was absolutely brutal but I did see some deer moving. The boy filled a doe tag about 45 minutes after being in the stand.

I went out tonight and not ten minutes in the stand a little buck and doe came out. The little buck came into the decoy and sniffed the rear end and I had it a buck. They ended up going behind me so I was watching them to see if they were gonna wind me, they didnt. 15 seconds later I look back toward the decoy and there is a giant 8 or 9 pointer walking toward my decoy all stiff legged didnt have much time to draw and shoot. He was already 15 feet from the decoy. Hit him alittle low but right behind the shoulder should find him in the morning.

good luck

Also went out during all that wind and ended my bow season. Had the decoy out and had a small basket eight point come in at 7:30 to check out the decoy and then leave. At 9:00 I had a real nice buck come in to the decoy posturing and bumping the decoy just as the wind was really getting bad up on the ridge. Long story short I finally got a shot at him and hit him in the front shoulders good. He ran 70 yds. and piled up. 140" ten pt. with 2 stickers. He found a new home. Will try to get picture(s) up if I can figure it out otherwise will wait for wife to help me out when she gets home. It pays to hunt when ever you can this time of year.
