I Think like several years in the past, this year will be a disappointing rut for those not tagged out yet. Bucks are breading does and have been and they will continue to trickle into estrous and the only real excitement will be if a hot doe is under your stand. This explains the activity and lack thereof seen by many......you won't have a lot of does cycling at one time, leading to a decrease in intense action so to speak!!

I actually prefer it like this. I am most likely in the minority, but not being able to take weeks at a time off for the rut, I have to make due with weekends, and this year I took two 4 day weekends which are next weekend and the following. Instead of having a large amount of does in estrous at one time and different bucks locked down, it makes the bucks compete for the few does that are in cycle at the time. Meaning they search more and spend less time locked down.

Considering its only nov. 3rd I don't know how you can make this statement...

ditto. i love the discussions on this site, so please explain. if daylight triggers the rut, how has that changed this year?

 Darn, and I thought things were really coming along nicely, great weather and lots of activity.

I read an article on my phone the other day. Longer article on "the rut not being what it used to be" - http://www.northamericanwhitetail.com/2013/10/29/rut-aint-used/ One perspective. I, personally, have noticed less intense ruts the last 5 years, no doubt about it from what I've seen. Still think the best days remain about the same but the intensity has lessened a lot where I've hunted.

I really hope your right, so that way your brothers and cousins will be done hunting too. Ruts over everyone go home and get ready for gun season. :moon:

At least one educated person exists in this forum!! I just read that article Sligh and it couldn't be said much better....

Only takes 1 hot doe to make the woods go absolutely bonkers...

True, that was the case for me on Saturday, one hot doe came thru and she was tailed by a big one, he got within 40 yards and then chased her into the beans.

Within the next hour, I had smaller and medium sized bucks cruising around everywhere.

Then that evening not much, nothing yesterday in the wind...so it depends on your does and the weather.

I read the North American Whitetail article as well. Very well written, not sure that I agree with all of it but I really don't have any basis for not agreeing with it, just my opinion. I do agree completely that the rut seems more spread out than it used to be, but honestly I would rather have it that way. If the main activity of the rut happened within a one week time frame, it would be easy to miss. If it's spread out over the course of 2 or 3 weeks (even if it is a little slower) it still provides more opportunity to catch some of it. I haven't hardly seen any action yet and believe the best is yet to come in my area. Either way, there's not a thing I can do about it so I'll have fun with what I'm presented:way:

Really don't get this one at all. Do you run trail cams, have you been out sitting lately? I sat last night in the wind and killed my biggest buck to date. He came in grunting and on a trot....alone. This is the first time I have ever seen this buck in daylight, with my own eyes or on the 4 trail cams around my small timber patch. I have had tons of bucks hitting scrapes in the last week, but its all at night. I can promise you one thing every single year. The bucks will be more visible from Nov 4-18 during daylight than any other time, PERIOD. Watch trail cams, go glass, sightings of mature (4+) bucks on their feet during shooting light will increase 10x in the next two weeks. So how would that make you feel sorry for guys hunting the next two weeks? I am really lost here.

Yep. Ive been seeing alot of action out of small bucks. Best is yet to come in my opinion. This past weekend I could have shot 6 little dudes gettin crazy.

I simply hunt. Each day and deer is different. You never know and that is why it never gets old. Only takes a few seconds to make a season.

I don't know..but I killed a pretty decent nine point yesterday. He was harassing some does that had bedded down 40 yards from me. After he had chased them for a minute..I threw 4 short chasing grunts at him. He came charging in, looking for a fight, only to have his life extinguished by a Shwacker. I think we are in for 3 good weeks of chasing and cruising.
