Hmmm, the ruts different this time? Not sure I agree. The only thing I know from my daily trips out to my favorite hunting areas is EHD has taken a bit of a toll on our numbers over here in SW Iowa. I do agree with "6" and feel the month and the process of the rut is coming along well. I see and photograph bucks daily.

Also, nothing can replace good old hard work and I can actually say I scout more than I hunt after 31 seasons. I have circles around my eyes from by binocs. The bags under my eyes are from being old and tired! Haha!

Best time on stand is your first time on stand and do it this week and next, every year. Take a portable with you always and be willing to move if you have too and hunt like a dog, night and day and make it happen! Life's short, do it right!

Relax, be positive and enjoy!

If anything, when the flood gates do open, woods go calm in my experience. No competition for bucks then and they just lock down with does. I see more buck movement with fewer does in than when the majority are actually in.

Now take the few days leading up to peek breeding, those can be crazy!! Once the does are actually in, bucks just lock on them and only move once they move....least in my experience and its why I love the 6-10th. See some crazy chasing then (just before peak breeding) then starting again around the 20th....wonder what is happening in between those days?? :D

Well I have sat every day of the season but 3 so far this year and last night was my first sign of chasing.. so I believe I still have time.. not in a hurry anyways.. I can fill my tags with does in December if need be.

Haven't seen as much early chasing as I usually do, but I don't think anything is off track this year. Rut may be a few days later this year than the average, but I still bet it's going to be close.

I actually prefer it like this. I am most likely in the minority, but not being able to take weeks at a time off for the rut, I have to make due with weekends, and this year I took two 4 day weekends which are next weekend and the following. Instead of having a large amount of does in estrous at one time and different bucks locked down, it makes the bucks compete for the few does that are in cycle at the time. Meaning they search more and spend less time locked down.

I completely agree. Peak breeding time can be tough because bucks aren't moving if they are locked up with a hot doe. Unless she moves, he aint moving either.

My little guys just started looking the last few days. So I figure still a few days out in my area. Oh yup guessing right around the 7th same as the last 10 years in my area.

No, didn't you hear butternuts Bradley. It's not on, it's over. No action left in the state. You must be mistaken...

I don't remember saying it was over? The majority of mature bucks are locked on to does who are almost ready or already there.....with some already being bread!!

Had 8 doe in the food plot last night. Big body 8 (rack was all broken up) came in to check them out. Sniffed and grunted at all of them and then moved on. He was definitely on the move but just doesn't seem like the doe are quite there yet. Have seen several 150+ during daylight for a few days now. Just not the one I am looking for. He is still nocturnal!

Good luck everyone!

How long have you been hunting? You really don't have a clue about the rut. They are not "locked onto does"! Even if they would be, so what! I have shot plenty of high scoring bucks "locked on a doe". Matter of fact I shot a 165 last year that was "locked on a doe" as you say. Don't give advice unless you know what you are talking about!

Not that I know anything. I have only been hunting trophy whitetails in Iowa for over 30 years.

False! Does are still with there fawns not locked down. The chasing phase is just starting and with the new moon this week there are going to be some giants hitting the ground. The light switch is on it's way up!:way:

Yes, does still with fawns is my observation too. Thursday morning looks to be the start of the madness.

Saw a buck Sunday night along the edge of a cut bean field and a standing corn field with a doe along the roadside. Saw the same 2 deer bedded 50 yards from the exact same spot this morning on my way home from hunting. Had a buck Friday night 70 yards from my stand with a doe pinned down the whole time I was in the stand. To bad it was to dark when the other bucks showed up to investigate! Do I agree with this statement? No, see the same thing every year and will bet a lot of studs will fall in the next couple of weeks. Even though it is real slow the last couple of days (my guess is coonhunters going through land) I will still log hours in the stand.
