Having my old hunting buddy come hunt with me this season has made my fall great. We have had fun this year.
A little back story, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 10 years ago and he beat that, not uncommon but still cancer. His bowhunting started slowing down a bit with that, his kids being at the active age, and a stressful job. Then last August they found that he had Thymoma. Not going to lie, we shed a few tears together because his prognosis was so-so due to the size and location. Exactly 1 year ago this week I called him up and told him to get his bow and come out, his son knew he was dealing with some depression. Got him in a tree Sunday and he was in surgery at the U that next Tuesday before Thanksgiving. But we had a great hunt, we both got to see the same dandy buck by both our stands that night. It was a complicated surgery and he came out without a complaint, which is his personality. Endured 12 weeks of radiation to start 2025, still no complaints. He has heart and lung damage after the radiation, still no complaints and he isn't slowing down. Got him back to hunting hard this fall and we are both savoring every moment this year. Last Friday we ended up sitting within a couple hundred yards of each and we got that same buck from last year. We've had a great year and it's not over yet. He had a miss Saturday so he's going to be back at it this weekend...One of my best falls in a long time...Thankful for this season and that another good family man beat the big C.
