Brassica Root Disease/Pests

I started my first food plot this year, approx. 1 1/2 acres which mainly consists of a few different plants of the brassica family. Someone told me that brassicas can not be planted in the same plot year after year due to some kind of root disease/pest problem. Just wondering if there is some truth to this and how it can be prevented. Thanks

I have not experienced this personally, but I trust that it would be true based upon others' input.

To avoid it, just rotate your brassica's every year, with an acre and a half to work with you can go 1/2 acre brassica's, 1/2 acre clover, 1/2 acre rye/peas/oats, and just shuffle the three spots each year so brassica's don't follow brassica's on any of the ground.

This may sound really stupid....but can you plant beans without the use of big equipment. I have a plot where I can't get tractors etc into. Or what else could I plant there because I have brassicas in mine for the first year. Doing great but I don't want to kick myself in the azz later on next year. Any thoughts???

You bet! Just till or disc up the area, broadcast the beans, lightly till or disc them in and cultipack if you can.

Plant the beans in early May and the you can overseed them with forage radish and winter rye in late august just before leaf drop...piece a cake! :way:
