Brassica Question

I planted this plot on August 1st and took pics on the 14th of August and the 19th of Sept. Just wondering if anyone knows why spots of the plot are turning brown.

In some cases brassicas (like corn) have been drowning because of excessive rainfall this year in Iowa. Heavy rains also push nitrogen beyond the root zone and in your case it appears you added some cereal grains which can be a little like adding grass to a corn field.

Brassicas start to suffer when the cereals start sucking up nitrogen and other nutrients that the brassicas desperately need. I never recommend mixing cereals with mid summer planted brassicas for that reason.

How much fertilizer did you apply at planting?

They look better then my winter greens they went to crap anybody know if the deer will still eat them I am a little bummed about it I have a pretty good chunk of change in them. Everybody that I know who has planted them this year having same problems

Wintergreen's are just brassicas so they did poorly for the same reasons as everyone's did...too much water. On well drained soils brassicas and corn did fairly well but on heavy soils with out good drainage they suffered.

Sometimes even though we do everything right...the weather puts a kink in our plans...;)

Do you think they will still eat them I do have some nice turnips on them

This is Imperial wintergreens too. Isn't the grassy looking stuff Kale? We put 200 lbs of 19-19-19 on before seeding.

Two years ago we put way to much lime in this very spot and haven't checked the ph since. Would the ph be to high cause this? There has not been a lot of rain on this since we planted so I don't think that's the case. Thanks guys

Did some searching for kale pics and it's definitely not the grassy looking stuff. Not sure what the grassy looking stuff is now. All I planted was a bag of Wintergreens.

They should eat the turnips later on...;)

No...kale is a brassica...looks just like rape and turnips for the most part so you have something else growing in there, probably added with the wintergreen mix I presume.

I use a minimum of 80-100#'s of actual nitrogen and 100#'s each of actual P&K so that requires 200#'s or 46-0-0 urea and 400#'s of 6-24-24

Triple 19 is great but you probably needed 400-5003's per acre.

Brassicas do better at higher PH's but without a soil test it's difficult to say if your PH is now to high??

What the Imperial people told myself and another friend was that it was lack of nitrogen due to the all the moisture. Mine have all went to crap in the last 3 weeks they told us to re fertilize with a high nitro fertilizer one of my friends did this and said it helped a bunch I was hesitant because of the time of year and I've spent enough money on my hobbies this year.

Now I'm really curious what the grassy stuff is. I didn't add anything with the wintergreens.

We put 200 lbs on a 1/2 acre so I should be in the ballpark.

It is what it is I guess. The deer are liking it so I'm satisfied.:D

I missed the "1/2 acre" part so yes your not far off on the fertilizer...perhaps it's just grass in there??

If you take a soil test next spring I'd be curious to see what you find? ;)

Yeah I'll have to take a soil test next spring. The grass is still weird. I worked this plot and rain was expected that night so I quick ran to town and got the seed and seeded it. It rained pretty good the next morning and within a couple days everything was starting to come up. The grass and brassicas came up evenly together like it was all part of the bag. Thanks for the replies...
