I find it interesting when subsidies are bashed at the same time as CRP is being promoted.
The farmers aren't greedy the State Examining board is thanks to former Governor Culver and his minions taking more money from we the peoples pockets by creating new licensing, exam fees for all the tradesmen. In the end it was just a revenue generating sceem. I would ask, how do you like paying for your continuing education to maintain your license and then paying the renewal fee not to mention the time away from family/hunting which most trades people do not get paid while doing these things. My hats off to the farmers who fought and won this battle, will help all trades. As with any purchase you make you get what you pay for, make an informed decision as to who you hire. Good conversation.
I don't. On one you are paying for conservation...the other you are paying them to make money. I fins it funny when fellow republicans bash welfare(i do too), but take direct subsidy payments. Look up ewg.org as I think that shows the subsidiea taken in each county, even by each farmer. CRP paymenta benefit water quality, what do farm subsidies benefit?
I love twisting that knife in my farming buddies side every chance I get.
I can't wait to hear the FB beg and plead for the rest of us to foot the bill to fix the silted in Miss. once the barges can't run anymore. There's a serious problem coming down the road there.
Thats no doubt.. A fella I work with that does a lot of catfishing in pools 16 and 17 said they hit a lot of areas in the main channel this year with only 8ft of water.
Your fellow republican who votes against the democrat run government is supposed to turn away democrat promoted subsidies? You don't get it, do you. I suppose now you are going to tell me you would walk away from it simply because you do not support it...
Jdubs said:maybe im old, out of touch, or slow on the uptake. what does gheyer mean?
My point, which is clearly lost on you, is CRP and direct subsidies are different.....and if farmers bitch about welfare...quit taking it..or like farmers in my precinct..put forth a plank that does away with direct subsidies. What's really sickening is guys making huge dollars & converting their crp, wetlands, low csr ground into farmground. Getting paid for farming low csr ground is gheyer than aids. Also...lol at the idea that farm subsidiea are a soley democratic idea...yup. Please tell me you are not brainwashed to think republicans are always right and dems are always wrong.
I'm guessing lots of field tile, a bulldozer, a backhoe, and probably federal govt permission.Do you have any idea what it takes to convert a wetland to cropground?
Just in case you folks have forgotten already, the river is low because of the worst drought most of us have ever lived to see.
I can drive three miles from home and ask what it takes to make a wetland farmable. Your definition of wetland may not be accurate, it doesn't have to be submerged. Anyway, no one is arguing that farming isn't the backbone of this country. I am arguing that many farmers and apologists, comoletely ignore the environmental damage that is being done. It's pretty pathetic that if I question modern farming practices and threir effects, I get labeled anti capitalism. Christ man, when I said Republican farmers bitching about welfare taking subsidies, my point is they all like to provide me stories of why subsidies are ok vs why foos stamps aren't. They both have some value, subsidies are just not needed at this time. As far as others addressing the capitalism thing....or why I care? Water safety, environmental issues, and our nations obesity all have aspects that can be traced back to modern farming. That is a fact. Also, I care since my tax dollars go to subsidies, both direct and in federal crop insurance. You don't want anyone telling you it's bad to plow under 30 CSR fields or draining wetlands...then you should have integrity enough to not take subsidies. Until that time, deal with people pisses because you value having a new King Ranch every two years vs having a filter stip along your waterway.Direct subsidy? Your definition of that would be what?
Your, sir, mentioned republicans being bad for taking subsidies. While many farmers, republican or not, would like to see the subsidy programs changed, they would be fools for not taking advantage of any program that benefits them.
By the way, I will say farming is the backbone of this country and farming practices have improved so much in the last century, they have become the true stewards and conservationists of the land.
Do you have any idea what it takes to convert a wetland to cropground?
My uncle farms 2000 acres and in the last 2 out of the last 5 years has been able to claim unemployment because his yields were not at the average. Now me being self employed trying to do the same thing (make money) can't get any unemployment from the govt. Farming has been damn good for the last 10 years and i can not complain about being slow either but why are farmers allowed more incentives than anyone else that is self employed. In my line of work I am at the greatest risk out of any for cause of fire because if they can not find a good reason for a fire it is pointed at electrical fire. The way i look at subsidies is its about like unions they had there time and place now it is time for them to go.
I would caution you from claiming obesity and farming are linked as a fact based on a study from some PH.d. who probably never put a shovel in the ground in his life. I love how those in the world of academe hide behind the walls of universities, conduct studies, and tell those who do it for a living how its done. I'm sure the authors who were from New York University and Univesity of California know a ton about farming. I would say today's overweight kids are the result of inactivity due to computer games and the pussification of our society that tries to protect us from ourselves at every turn. Give me a break .
