Tree Planting

I HATE admitting defeat!!!! But- here I am....
You win: squirrels, coons, chipmunks, etc. I am peacefully surrendering!!!

I kinda had to decide if I wanted another year of eradicating every living creature or going for plan B. Went with plan B. Only for nuts like chestnut, acorns, hazelnut, etc.

Be finished soon. Adding a few doors & should be like Fort Knox later.

Update on polar cuttings !! Looks like they are surviving .. they where 12inch cuttings . I put them in buckets of water fir about 2-3weeks to root before planting because of time issues on my part .. hoping I can find a herbicide to keep weeds down . lll keep every one updated how they do . Planted. 200 of them.

See below story on my tree planter. That link - my old one had to be euthanized... :(

But... I bought this tree planter last couple weeks. Heavy as can be. Buddy found it & brought it over to me so that was nice! I paid $1500 for it. Very solid & nice. Another buddy bought a similar one for same $. That’s a “big worker” on a farm with a tractor. If anyone ever thought of getting one. Could use it til ur done and sell it for same $ (or more with inflation) than u paid.

The Ozark Chinquapins made it thru the long cold winter. They were planted last fall as nuts in Mercer County, MO. I’ve always wanted to have an American Chestnut/Ozark Chinquapin cross, and that’s getting closer to reality.

Did u ventilate those tubes or are they in an area that stays cooler? Thoughts on venting chestnuts in tubes? Or the ozark chinquapin.

oh- second one.... chestnut - chinquapin cross..... why is that getting closer to reality? Lot of research & success with breeding/genetics stuff or what’s basic update?

The tubes are ventilated for all my seedlings.

There’s been chestnut/chinquapin crosses for other species, but I have never heard of an American Chestnut/Ozark Chinquapin cross. Only time will tel if that’s plausible or not.

I do know I collected nuts off a chinquapin hybrid (crossed with something unknown) that had nuts the size of Chinese chestnuts but only one nut per bur last fall at a research farm.

Checked the willows i stuck in ground where county cleared trees along road for new bridge. Can see woody stem & then growth in last few weeks. Maybe 18” tall now? Be interesting to see how tall they get this year. All of them look about like this .....

Man S,
Is there a make/model on that thing?
Looks awesome.

Anybody with experience with red dog wood in bottom wooded ground next to creeks ? was going to try a few cuttings ..

I have planted ROD in timber openings along a large creek 2 times. The first was 11 years ago and the second was last spring. I put 50 in 11 years ago unprotected and am aware of 2 that survive today and neither is flourishing. I think I have 2 problems with my effort - not enough sun in the areas I put them and the deer just murdered them with browsing before they could establish well and rubbing the few that survived that. There was enough sun at first but the canopy closed fast on them. So I did the whole thing all over again last spring in more or less the same way because I am hard-headed like that. I did try to hide them in downed treetops this time but the deer found some of them immediately. I honestly think deer get on my scent trail in the spring and follow me to from seedling to seedling and nip them babies off as they go.

Looking for suggestions on where I can rent a tree spade for a skid steer in sw iowa. Or better yet someone that has one for hire as I would need to rent a skid steer as well. Wanting to make a wall of cedars along a fence line. I have plenty of 3 to 6 foot cedars on the property close by already just need them moved. I'm near council bluffs ia. Thanks

I bought a used one long ago…. Let’s say it was “$5k”….. I’ve used it for YEARS. I could resell it for pry $5k today ;). Those one blade scoops are cheap alternative too.

In this thread of Paul's are pictures of a tree planting we did in spring of 2012 (or possibly 2011). It's wild to go up here now and see the progress in ~10 growing seasons. Large red, chinquapin, and pure white oaks. They really do grow fast IMO. It's just not the 'instant' improvement to hunting like NWSGs can be. But I'm really looking forward to the enjoyment the family will get from these trees in the future

Are you getting acorns off those ?
The larger chinquapins have produced acorns for a few years now. I've never seen more than a handful on at a time though, nothing crazy but I don't check them all that often during the summer truthfully. And once they fall they're in the thick brome and gobbled up by critters faster than I could ever get to them.
