    Timber Stand Improvment

Another TSI beginner here. The guidance I got from my district forester was to drop trees <6" in diameter - girdle > 6" (mainly from a safety standpoint). Basic equipment list, (1) quality primary chainsaw that is relatively lightweight but not under powered (2) HELMET with face shield/hearing...

Land value chart over time for iowa...

"Also, doesn't seem like there are as many listings lately either" No doubt about it. Many more realtors now selling rec farms vs 5 yrs ago but listings also sure seem to be slowing. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

    Rough Winter

Found this carcass yesterday. Torso length, hoof size and pedicle size has me guessing a 2.5 yo buck. There was a nice crop of 2.5s on cams this past fall - I hate finding these. Second winter in a row that I have found a dead buck carcass. [emoji35] Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

How cold is it in Iowa?

I don't like the stress this frigid period is putting on our deer herd. We don't need any winter kill around my farm after 2019s EHD episode. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

Those types of animals do not come around often - good luck keeping tabs on him.

Show on all habitat, conservation, building a farm - no deer hunts - any interest?

yes. the most recent series I watched that I found intriguing was "Whitetails from Scratch" by the Dukarts in MN (Deer Society). They had/have a series about how they approached improvements on their initial/first family land purchase which was approx. 100 acres. Instead of being about land...

Owning a farm with limited cash flow, saving $ or Increasing income....

I was blessed to be able to divert some inheritance funds (thanks Verne and Elizabeth) towards my farm purchase after watching the rec land market for numerous years. One of the best decisions I have ever made but wish I had taken the plunge 5-10 years earlier. In hindsight, I am confident...

TSI cost share question - do you need to contact the FSA-NRCS in the county of the farm or any office statewide ??

    New world starting today!!

Are things screwed up today politically, yes. Do I have concerns about debt levels throughout the world and the long term impacts to currencies and financial stability, yes. Is the wealth gap in this country getting bigger and leading to more social unrest, Big Yes. Do I think that the world...

    Bully buck deadhead

Never had any pics of him this fall after the 11/14/20 set of photos. The location of the deadhead was far back into the property in a spot I rarely get to so hard to tell how long he had been dead. The right side tines appear to have 4-5" of blood on them in the 11/14 images so it must have...

    Bully buck deadhead

I found this deadhead on Sat while taking a break from some TSI cutting. This buck had been on cams the past two seasons but I had never seen him on the hoof. He was a big bodied deer with poor antler genetics. This past Nov I got a series of pics showing blood on his busted antlers/tines so...

Crop prices, inputs & interest rates...

That is a big problem for our country. I could write more but don't want to drag this site into a political discussion. It would just be refreshing to be able to vote for someone you like rather than voting against someone you can't stand. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

Crop prices, inputs & interest rates...

Lumber at historic highs, grains up dramatically, crude back above $50. Seems like the whole commodity complex is showing signs of inflation pushing its way through the system. Wages, at least in IA, have also moved up in the past 2 yrs. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
