    Ringing Cedar

Thanks all. Time will tell how it goes I guess. I did leave 2 big ones for future treestand sites. They are good for that.

    Ringing Cedar

I have some spots in the timber where I have smaller halfway decent swamp white oak growing all around large cedars. I have been doing lots of tsi this winter and finally got to this particular area. I dropped what I could but there were a few cedars that I ringed instead of dropping due to me...

    Timber Stand Improvment

Very informative Skip. Thanks. Can you explain the difference between a veneer walnut vs a lumber tree?

    Tree Planting

I have planted ROD in timber openings along a large creek 2 times. The first was 11 years ago and the second was last spring. I put 50 in 11 years ago unprotected and am aware of 2 that survive today and neither is flourishing. I think I have 2 problems with my effort - not enough sun in the...

    Land Market Hasnt Slowed down

Yep, if the rec market is anywhere near that then go ahead and stick a fork in me now. I'm done!

    Land prices / insane!!!

Still no rec land inventory where I am in west central Illinois. I am starting to see a little ground that sold a couple years ago back on the market for twice the original selling price. We have alot of non-resident rec landowners around here and what little inventory there is seems to be some...

    Starting to think cell cams….

I have always been a die hard longbow and wood arrow guy who would never own nor want the "help" of a camera. I hunt from a stand mostly and plant a couple food plots. We all draw our lines for killing related to effort in different places. I have been doing this a long time and have learned...

    ISO Shingle Oaks

Forrest Keeling Nursery usually has them. You might check there in the spring. I have had good luck with their stock. I love shingle oak as a habitat tree and a food source for turkeys especially. But, I love it more to put stands in. It normally has great cover and the leaves hold through the...

    Land prices / insane!!!

I agree with the consensus here so far but the rec ground inventory just remains so low around me and I have to wonder how that will factor in too. Of course inventory has been low for years as far as I can tell too.

Single most important ingredient in a food plot?

We knocked down almost 2" in Adams County, IL last night. Most significant rain I've had by far for close to 2 months. Looks to be dry and hot again soon but I'll sure take what we got.

Single most important ingredient in a food plot?

I broadcasted brassicas on July 25 due to rain in the forcast. Got 1/2" that night and have managed about 2/10ths since. They are toast. Put rye, radishes and red clover into powder last weekend. Not looking good for that either. Been a tough late summer for the food plot plans for sure.

Impacts of fire on soil…. Several studies & data …

I have a good friend that is a botanist for the state of Illinois. He always advocates the burning of prairies and timbers. I have a forester that does my forest management plans who says to not burn my timber and in fact puts that in the plans he writes. Illinois has been burning state park...

John Deere tractors, R or E?

I bought a 38e new from the dealer in the spring of 2012 for $18,500 out the door and it came with a 6' blade. Not sure how many hours are on it but I seem to use it often. I live down a half mile dead end road with no other houses and had to be able to get out for work in deep snow. I have done...

    Brassicas

Timely discussion here for me. I broadcast brassicas into dead thatch July 26 and got 3/4" that evening. Haven't managed a drop since. Virtually no plants at this time. I will wait it out a couple more weeks and decide what to do I guess. I have more brassica seed but hate to throw more down...

    Logging Cedars

I was in Starksville MS last summer eating at a BQ joint with my family on an overnight on our way to Florida. Two old boys started up a conversation with me about looking for larger cedars. They were from Texas I think and headed north to try and find cedar for a business they had making mostly...

    Acorns to Oaks!

I've been planting acorns for 2 weeks now. Put in about 130 gallons so far. Most have been disced in while other places were hand planted. Hand planted 5 gallons tonight in fact. That is a huge bur oak acorn in your pic. I have seen tremendous bur and white acorn production around here. I need...

    Clover

Sorry if this has been covered already but anyone ever broadcast clover into standing beans as they are yellowing to establish a new clover plot for the following year? I have 4 acres of beans that are canopied out and will not harvest them. I want to establish a new clover plot as I am...

    Pin Oaks

Yep, that looks like pin oak. I am just a few miles south of you and I have none of them. I've seen guys call shingle oak pin oak around here I guess due to the shape of the leaf. Anyway, I'd trade you in a heartbeat although I do not hate shingle oak completely.

    Pin Oaks

Are you certain they are pin oaks? I live in west central illinois too - right on Bear Creek in fact and we have 0 pin oaks around me. In fact I've seen virtually none around here that weren't planted as yard trees. A lot of people confuse shingle oak with pin oak. We have tons of naturally...
