Possibly the biggest reason for tree planting failures is grass and weed competition. I would expect the slow growth and plenty of failures if they don't get water the first year or 2 of establishment. JMO
Education seems to get a ton of money to support a certain segment that repeats the same problems every generation. My wife teaches Spec Ed and Behavior Disorder and I think they get way too much money when you factor the bang for the buck.
Has this thread changed your mind any on this?
Same question? Just curious. I was kind of in the camp that I didn't feel like they did much more than play with mature deer run them around just to get their kicks but now I can see large populations of coyotes are definitely hammering mature...
The one thing I haven't seen listed which should be number one on every list is better education. The Majority has no idea that deer populations could be low. Most trust the DNR and feel like if there's tags available then there must be plenty of deer.
If you're serious about making our heard...
I would've much rather been testing them out instead of moving a couple of family members all week. Somehow I ended up being the primary mover of two households when I went into the week thinking I would just be an extra hand if needed for 1 household. Hoping to get out Wed, Thur, and Friday and...
I can't bring myself to sit in a heated blind. Well I sat in one last year but didn't turn the heat on even though my feet froze. I really don't like sitting in any blinds, and for some weird reason enjoy the pain and discomfort that comes with exposed stand sitting. I also hate not being able...
Great post and in the title I wish I had added management/bully buck. I would 100% rather shoot a 6.5 130 inch buck over a 3.5 150" buck. The biggest issue is working on becoming an expert at aging on the hoof and I feel like I am better at "aging" other guys trail cam bucks than my own.
We had a mixed season. Overall saw a lot of deer, but a couple of drives we saw less than last year. A couple of drives we saw 20 plus deer similar to last year. The biggest thing is 2 years in a row lots of really small does, and limited mature does. I was watching a field one night with a...
That second one is a horse.
Ahh. Thanks! So it really does just have to do with antler potential. Really nothing to do with overall heard health. I kind of assumed that but I always hear about how age is the true trophy and blah blah blah and we have to manage for age cuz of heard...
That's what we've been doing. I have a lot of deer bedding on it. Adding a few acres of RC switch grass next spring. I've found 4 dead deer in the last year though. 3 years ago would have sometimes double digits does, the last 2 years have only been 3-5,so this will be the 2nd year in a row we...
Those are some great examples. We only have 30 acres but there are a lot of bucks. Not very many mature bucks though so it's tough to know which ones to thin out. The younger bucks are hard to know which ones will be nice.
I think it would be neat if some of you with large properties and lots of cameras could post some pics of bucks you want to call and maybe even post some pointers on why you are choosing them. I'm all for shooting cull bucks. IN fact that is what I primarily went for this year on our small...
One thing to think about is I believe cedars are kind've sensitive to fire while I believe switch thrives if it's burned off occasionally. Just something to keep in mind as you enact your plan
A place I used to hunt had like 20 acres of switch. Every morning at daylight we would watch several bucks disappear in it to bed for the day. This is much wider than OP switch so could make a difference.
