    What would you pick?

Check out an Echo. Friend of mine has one and it starts much easier than a Stihl. In my experience, if you don't cut back the choke on a Stihl when it "burps," they can be tough to start. Have also used a Makita that was a very nice saw.

    Muzzleloader Cleaning

In season, if I've shot once or even just loaded and unloaded several times, I'll pull the plug and run a couple of patches soaked in TC No. 13 down the barrel. Usually, I'll put the patch over a bronze bore brush. Also clean up the plug and regrease with CVA grease with Teflon. If I've shot...

    Post election gun ban alert

If you've read the news, you know that there's been a run on gun sales before Obama takes office. In fact, the Ames Trib had a page one story today talking to the folks at JAX who can't keep guns in stock. Ames Tribune article I've wondered how much money the firearm manufacturers have...

    Another successful Kansas trip

Thanks guys. We have a great place to hunt in the flint hills area. Here's the field where I shot my bird. You can see the limestone shelves along the top of the ridges. Most of the hill tops are prairie pasture with deep, wooded gullys in between. The crop fields (and the birds) are in the...

    Another successful Kansas trip

Got back from Kansas last Friday after another great trip. Great weather, lots of birds, a few morels. Three of us ended up with six birds in two days of hunting. Sorry if this gets a little long. My buddy Bob scored the first morning on a nice tom. I had a hen come into my setup, but the toms...

    Headin' for Kansas

Finally going to head out tomorrow to hunt in northcentral Kansas. I missed out on last year's trip so I'm pumped to go. We had great luck two years ago... so hope to have some new photos to post. Also plan to hit southern Iowa on the way back.

    Open Field Placement of decoys

I've had a similar situation in the past and it's hard to know what to do. Sounds like they don't have any particular pattern for using that field. Best suggestion I have is to try and roost them and be back on that side the next morning. Maybe set up along the edge about 50-100 yds from where...

    How old are you????

I'm right there with you Turkeyriver, Bonker, Goatman, Danno, and other similar old farts. I'm 52 - Class of 74. Bonker, you forgot Sloe Gin (typically what the women drank besides Boone's Farm) and Maddog 20/20. I too am amazed that I survived though many brain cells didn't.

    Mouth Calls-FRUSTRATION!!

Primos diamond cut, although they've changed them and I can't get as good a sound out of the new ones. They used to come in a three-pack and the raspy old hen was my favorite. I could really cut, yelp and purr with it. Best thing I can recommend is get a tape or CD of real turkeys calling, go...

    Turkey Jerky

I've boned out the thighs and legs a couple of times, ground that and made jerky (jerky gun) and it turned out pretty good as well. Used Nesco Cajun Spice. Since it's dark meat, it didn't look that different than beef or venison jerky.

    Tough Decisions

I've mentioned this in other posts but I don't think Willie Suchy is using the number of deer reported as the absolute number of deer taken. The reporting system is just one of many tools the DNR has to estimate the number harvested. In spite of those not reporting, it still has to give a better...

    Tough Decisions

Iowabruce, You seem to want it both ways. I too remember the 70's and waiting to see what kind of tag you got. I also only hunt late muzzleloader currently and wasn't pleased by the DNR dropping the special season right in the middle of MY season. But that's being selfish and short-sighted. I...

    Tough Decisions

One thing that I think influenced the decision to open the special season now, as opposed to the January antlerless season is that delaying it until Jan. 10 would mean that shotgunners would have to buy a 2008 license. [Late muzzle hunters going out the 11-13 will have to have a 2008 license in...

    Photo editing question

Shovel, I bought a small Canon color flatbed scanner (Canoscan LiDE 30)for about $80 bucks a year or two ago. The scanner does a heck of a nice job -- only has a USB cable and doesn't need a power cord. It came with Arcsoft studio software that, while not as powerful as Photoshop, will still...

    Antlerless licenses available

I was curious to find out how many antlerless licenses were still available. According to the DNR's website, at 3:30 p.m. today (12/14) there were 22,709 licenses in 25 counties: County WINNESHIEK - 1806 ALLAMAKEE - 1802 VAN BUREN - 1579 DECATUR - 1546 APPANOOSE - 1347 LEE - 1289 GUTHRIE -...
