    How drought hardy is alfalfa?

Good alfalfa is a maintenance monster as Skip implied. Ours was super dried up and slightly browned in July and first half of August due to hot dry conditions and leaf hopper burn. I have sprayed for hoppers twice this year, they are horrible little bastards suck the life out of the plants. We...

    Best Back Pack SPRAYER?? STIHL?

Chapin 63985 20 volt lithium purchased last spring. Been working flawlessly. Almost 2 hrs run time. Get an extra battery, 500 trees no problem. BTW Skip, lithium EV has been working well for 2 months so far.

    Hunt Terra Maps

We have used three different companies before using Hunterra maps. If you want custom maps with incredible detail, or just a simple aerial map, Hunterra would be my first choice.

    White proso millet

Daver, I am looking to plant something other than milo as well. The problem I have had with milo is that once it matures the deer start on it and in 2 weeks there is nothing left for the birds. How did your buckwheat do last year? Rut

    What is this

It sure looks like cutaneous fibromas (a skin virus, like warts). Not something to be overly concerned with, however it didn't work out well with that deer.

    Milo, buckwheat, atrazine questions

The ISU site has good info on buckwheat and it is atrazine sensitive. Check the maturity date on your milo some varieties mature in 90 days or less. You then would be good to plant until around July 10-15. If there was no atrazine buckwheat would be a great choice for your birds. Best planting...

    Local sources for apple trees?

Even though Adams County Nursery isn't local they have a similar climate. We have planted 50-100 of their trees every year for the past 3 years with near 100% success. Read the info provided on this site and select the most disease resistant varieties, plant them, cage them and keep them watered...

    Handheld GPS

Can anyone recommend one for trapping? When I'm running over 100 sets one of my biggest fears is forgetting one. Another guy was trapping some of the same land as me this year and he forgot several. It was ugly to say the least.

    Republican Response

After his majesty the divider in chief gave the state of the union address, Joni Ernst(wearing camo shoes) spoke on behalf of the Republicans. Iowa sportsmen and Iowa residents in general should be proud!

    Can deer have Mange?

Yes Steve, its called Demodetic mange, caused by mites. Supposedly rare but I've seen it or some other skin disease several times here and in other states as well.

    Potential Pa Record Typical

In Pa some of the counties in the metro areas are shotgun and archery only. Some of the townships or municipalities within those counties are archery only or have a no discharge ordinance. As far as the negative comments on the Pa Game Commission, in the areas with low deer numbers the problem...

    Cicadas?

They absolutely were wrong. The little bastards were extremely destructive to our young oaks, chestnuts, apple and pear trees. All the damage needs to be pruned back now. Its not over either, now when the eggs hatch I'm worried that the grubs will feed on the roots.

    Scramble time

Replant milo maybe, I have planted milo in early July with tremendous success. Bob's suggestion of buckwheat would be a great choice as well.

    Bees

The way I understand it, when planting the seed coating combined with flow type powder lubricant create dust, become airborne and land on adjacent plants. Post it up Skip.

    Bees

Check out the report from ISU's Mary Harris on neonic seed coatings. Recently there has been 800 studies on the subject and the scientists all came to the same conclusion. Very interesting, maybe someone here that is more computer savy could post a link. Makes me think as conservationists...

    What to do???

Sounds like a great spot for some pollinator habitat. And add some wildflowers to the mix of your choice. You might be able to get cost share for sure. Your quail will love it and the bee's could use a little help too!

    The quail zone

I bought a boomless sprayer for doing the same kind of projects on our farms a few years back. Its been working great to keep the cool season grass at bay. One thing I just tried last fall was after a hard freeze spraying some of my pollinator habitat that was planted 4yrs ago that had a lot of...
