    Buck down Oct. 8

Got out for the first time this weekend down in southern Iowa. Hung a new stand Saturday morning over a clover field and was back in the stand (after the rain) by 3:00 p.m. Saw a few does but it was windy and no bucks to be seen. By 6;30, the wind had died down and it was a perfect evening. Just...

    First ever late afternoon bird

Filled my 4th season tag just after 6:00 pm last Friday. Had lots of gobbling on my morning setups but birds seemed to always move off in the wrong direction. Finally did a three-hour sit in a blind in a field near a suspected roosting area and had four two-year-old birds come in to decoy set.

    Kansas Bird

Had a tough few days hunting in the Flint Hills -- cold, snow, rain and lots of wind. Saw birds but tough to get close enough and they weren't responding to calls, probably because they couldn't hear them over the wind. After no luck Thursday or Friday, two of our group connected Saturday...

    Strutters!

On the way to northwest Iowa on Easter morning, saw two groups of birds with several toms strutting. One group of about eight birds had four toms puffed up just off Highway 20 not far from Coalville exit by Fort Dodge. Then saw about a dozen birds with three strutting toms near the egg farm on...

    Antlerless Licenses

Picked up two antlerless licenses today for Late Muzzle ... one for Boone and one for Story. They are going fast so if you're hunting counties with surplus does, you better hurry. Check here to see how many licenses are left...

    Another successful Kansas trip

Got back from Kansas last Friday after another great trip. Great weather, lots of birds, a few morels. Three of us ended up with six birds in two days of hunting. Sorry if this gets a little long. My buddy Bob scored the first morning on a nice tom. I had a hen come into my setup, but the toms...

    Headin' for Kansas

Finally going to head out tomorrow to hunt in northcentral Kansas. I missed out on last year's trip so I'm pumped to go. We had great luck two years ago... so hope to have some new photos to post. Also plan to hit southern Iowa on the way back.

    Antlerless licenses available

I was curious to find out how many antlerless licenses were still available. According to the DNR's website, at 3:30 p.m. today (12/14) there were 22,709 licenses in 25 counties: County WINNESHIEK - 1806 ALLAMAKEE - 1802 VAN BUREN - 1579 DECATUR - 1546 APPANOOSE - 1347 LEE - 1289 GUTHRIE -...

    Quotable Taxidermist for Hooters Magazine

At work, I get a number of emails every day from Profnet, a service that puts media people in contact with experts in various fields. Media people submit requests and Profnet sends it out to PR and academics. Here's one that came today that's a big opportunity for one of our "resident"...

    Five-bearded tom

Had to share a photo of a buddy's bird from this year's Kansas trip. I didn't get to go because of a flood (sump pump failed) the day we were going to leave. Shortest of the beards still measured 7"+ and the bird ranked #9 on the all-time Kansas list. (Almost 23 lbs, 1 1/4" spurs, 48"+ of beard.)

    Bobcat

My buddy who got the picture of the eagles finally captured the bobcat on film, though he didn't cooperate in posing head-on. Still, it looks like a big, healthy cat!

    Bald Eagles captured

Had to share a photo my buddy got this past weekend over a deer carcass. He'd seen fresh bobcat tracks around the carcass and hoped to get a picture of that, but these guys used up all the film.

    Locked-up bucks

Got these from a friend of a friend of a friend so not sure what the story is or where these bucks were found. Really a shame!

    Resident Doe Licenses Remaining

I took this information off the DNR's site about 2 p.m. so the numbers could already have changed, but here's what's left for doe licenses. Good news is, there are still over 22,700 available. Bad news is, they're scattered over only 26 counties: Available --- County 1579 --- DECATUR 1565 ---...

    Coyote Down

Ran up to Northwest Iowa for the day on Saturday for some pheasant hunting. Figured with the snow, it would be perfect. There was about 7" of snow, no wind and 8 degrees when we started at 8 p.m. Worked a creek on my wife's uncle's farm and saw no birds but kicked out five does. Moved to the...

    Ames Bow Hunt Suspended

After failing to show at any of the meetings were an urban hunt ordinance was discussed and passed, a group of Ames citizens suceeded in getting the Ames City Council to halt the hunt until further discussion can take place. People are apparently afraid for their children and pets in the parks...

Awesome Kansas Hunt (Now w/ photos)

Got back Saturday from a three-day hunt on private land in Kansas. Three of us scored six birds ... it was unreal!! Sorry this is long, but we had lots of action. The first morning (Weds) we split up and at 6:36 a.m., my buddy Bob had four toms come in right off the roost. He ended up taking...

    Cool pot calls

There's an extensive thread on Iowa Outdoors site about these pot calls. Lights Out Calls Quite a few of the guys over there swear by them. Figure a guy can never have too many calls.
