A Serious Question

Today my dad and I were walking some of our ground and chased out four bucks. One of the four was over 160 easily. We had no time to shoot at them so we headed back to the truck. As we are doing that I notice the four bucks coming back at us. I hurried up and got to a position to shoot and shot the last buck being the biggest one... and what I thought was a great hit since he dropped like a rock and started rolling around turned out to be a butt shot. I unloaded my gun on him as he popped back up and ran away. As he did I noticed his rear end being covered with blood. As he jumped the fence he did a end over end fall. I figured it would be the end of him there but he got up and ran away to another timber. We tried finding a blood trail and even walked the other timber hoping to find him but no luck. What should I do? Is this going to be one of those cases when the deer dies two weeks later? any advice would be great!

Don't know how much snow cover you have in your area but we are loosing it today some in my area. You could very well have gotten some major arteries in the back portion of the deer and I would think if any snow cover still exists it would be to your advantage to try and use it before it's (i.e. snow) is gone.

Good luck.

Very possible, but usually they can't get to far without bleeding out.

If he keeps falling perhaps you broke a leg although that in itself would'nt have to be fatal.

Lot of "non lethal" area in the hip area so it's hard to say. Sure seems like you would have a blood trail of some kind, pretty tough with out something to follow.

Good luck...hope you find him! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Sounds like he's hit hard if you asked me. He might not be bleeding out but you hit some bone somewhere to knock him that much off kilter. I'd talk to your neighbor and see if they'll let you pursue him in the morning.

He ran about a half mile over an open corn field. then crossed the gravel road and went right through the cemetery. Then about a quarter of a mile thought a pasture then from there I have no clue where He went. The pasture is joined with the timber. So he could be anyways I would assume. After all that running I never found a drop of blood. We have little to no snow.

I am assuming that none of your other shots hit him?

There's one strategy that has worked for me in the past- BASICALLY, that deer is going to be SLOWED way down and quite possibly a deer you could JUMP again if you can find him, I'd be getting as many buddies as possible together!!!!!!!!

I only hunt with me and 2 brothers (and all we do is sit) BUT, could you get some guys together and do some major GRID searching? I'd cover every little nook and cranny and every thick spot and fence line in the county. If you had 6-10 guys, you could cover major area. I guess I'm throwing a few ideas out there BUT the main thing is DON'T GIVE UP, sounds like that deer could bleed out (be laying dead right now) or you could catch up to him. Get a plan, a crew, cover major ground (and all the little parts in it) and don't give up!!!!!!!! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

**How long from the time you saw him until your last sighting? He could bleed out in HOURS but if we are talking 20 minutes- I doubt it. Heavy bleeding? Gushing? This is also a case of the deer possibly living and recovering if he didn't bleed out BUT if I were just to put a $100 bet on it- I'd say he's laying out there somewhere. This is also a case that TONS of my buddies have and they don't search hard enough- THEN they find the deer next spring shed hunting, many times walking right by it.
***I know this sucks, keep plugging and give every detail you can.... (It really will come down to how diligent you are and how persistent tomorrow!!!)

Well. first off I was so pumped that I dropped this big buck with one shot and started celebrating while running up to him 25 feet away. The part of him jumping up and running away from you shocked me mroe than anything and thas probably why I missed the other 4 shots. I am going to skip the stand hunting tomorrow morning even though it is probably going to be the last nice morning of the year. Instead I am going to walk the river since the river goes on the west edge of the timber. Keep in mind this timber is probably 1-4 of the section. Its small, but extremely thick. Hopefully he is in the brush laying there but I will find out tomorrow. Will keep you all posted.
And thanks for the advice!

looked and looked today and no luck. Going to look very hard tomorrow and then I will give up. Want to get one more day in before the "snow storm" hits on tuesday.

If you do get some snow on the ground start following the coyote tracks, also look to see where the crows are at. If he is dead they will find him! I find several dead bucks a year while out shed hunting following the scavengers. Good luck.

the best thing, not pursue, if your unsure of your shot, wait, let the animal go, lay down, if its a fatal shot, he will lay down, and bleed out, if you pursue, he may not. most often hes within 100yrds of where you shot him,if your next to a creek, go strait to that path and follow it if no blood trail is showing.remember, wounded deer donot like travling up hill,if there is water, they will seek it as they get a fever , and will try to stop it. or the bleeding, goodluck
