I drove out to my in-law's place yesterday afternoon to butcher a doe for them that was shot on Saturday. This is also the place where I bowhunt and shotgun hunt. As I get to where I can see their drive, I also notice two trucks parked next to each other in the middle of the road. I slowed down and waited for the oncoming truck to move so I could get by. As I'm waiting, I notice another vehicle down the other road that T's into the one I'm on. Long story short (sorry, already made it long), the vehicle facing me pulls away, leaving one hunter standing next to his truck, right in the middle of the road with his gun out. As I start to pull around his truck, he fires his gun into straight up into the air. Keep in mind, I don't know the guy and he's about 15 yards in front of my truck. I pulled up and ask what he's doing. He said they had a cripple in the property I hunt and were trying to push it back to their place. I then see 6 healthy deer run the opposite direction, back to the farm he said they were hunting. All other vehicles make a mad scramble in that direction. He then proceeds to tell me there was a monster buck in the group. This somewhat made me think he was full of it about the wounded deer. Don't get me wrong. I'm not against chasing big deer, and appreciate anyone who pursues a wounded animal, but firing a loaded weapon from the middle of the roadway 15 yards in front of someone's vehicle made me mad. Not to mention he shoots the thing right into the air, having no idea where his slug will land. (he did that to scare the deer back to where they came from)
Sorry to rant. I'm a bowhunter and shotgun hunter and really get tired of guys like this. I can't imagine if someone that doesn't hunt had this guy fire a slug in front if them. The farmer who lets me hunt knows these guys somehow and knows they occasionally cross onto his place. That's why I didn't freak out on the guy. Didn't want to burn my bridges. I think I'll let the farmer know. Keep in mind I don't want to start any trouble, but I thought about calling the DNR.
