Are tillers worth the expense

Im seriously thinking of purchasing a 3pt- 5' tiller to prepare my food plots but I'm unsure whether I'll like using one because of the slower operating speed and high cost. I'm currently using a disc and cultipacker to prepare my seed beds. I will be doing approx. 2-3 acres of plots each season. So what does everyone think? Stick with my disc or buy the tiller? What if any advantages does a tiller have if any? Thanks,

The tiller will expose more soil, which is better. Will also make the soil finer. Tilling will give you more uniform plant growth. Cast your amendments then till them in. If you buy the tiller, my father in law has a four ft or bigger drag/rake to level it off. I know he would sell it. I could go in and measure it for sure. Works great. The only real down side to till would be more soil erosion depending on where you're tilling...........ck

Tillers are the best for breaking up virgin soil. But once the ground/sod has been worked up, a disc will cut just as deep and is much, much faster for covering ground than a tiller.
So in my opinion, if you are not creating 'new' food plots, you may want to spend you $$$ on other things. But there is nothing prettier than a freshly tilled plot!

I think you will like the tiller, for 2-3 acres its the way to go if you ask me. Now if you were doing 10 acres for instance, a disc is in order.

A tiller can give you a seed bed that a disc may be able to do in 3-4 passes if conditions are ideal.

Yup, I found that out the ONE time it rained here last summer.

One thing I like about the tiller is how well it grinds up the trash and helps build the soil.

For several small plots I would say tiller. The dirt seems to be looser than after discing, specially in ground with more clay to it.

Your only doing 2-3 acre....its a hobby, if it takes you 2x the amount of time is it really a problem?
