Back Fat

I found it really odd that both the bucks I skinned and several I've seen skinned during shotgun season had no fat reserves at all. Usually the rump and back of bucks this time of year are covered with a thick layer of white talo. Rut must have taken its toll on these bucks, and not a great condition to be entering into Winter.

What are you guys seeing?

Same here. It has been like that on all the deer I have done in the last couple year. The buck end up being pretty lean as for the does fat fat fat.

I for one noticed the pre-rut kicking in about a week earlier here than it did last year. Wish I had hunted harder before the 10th of Nov. now. Lots of reports from area hunters of bucks still acting intrested in does. Guess they literally "rutted their arses off! My Nov.18th archery buck had very little back fat also.

The buck I dressed out from Saturday's hunt had some fat; about 3/4" thick at most but it was on the top of the rump with only a very thin layer over the back/loins. Definitely not as much as I've seen in past years.

That's what I'm hoping for! Hope they are hitting the fields trying to put some fat on.

Everything we skinned this year had very very little fat...even the does didnt have much..

Any buck I saw shot here near the end of the season had little or no fat left on it. I know whey're they'll be in a few weeks, in my neighbour's haystacks tearing apart his second cut alfalfa bales and eating what's left of an old pile of rotten oats. Lucky bugger gets all the good sheds.

I was going to post on this exact same topic. I skinned a doe and buck this week. The buck was so lean it was challenging to cape. The doe on the other hand had gobs of fat all over. It does make you wonder how they make it through the season!

I read in a whitetail biology book that bucks cut back on their eating when the deer population density is high. The theory stated was that it is so the does have plenty to provide them with nutrition they need to carry healthy fawns. Might be true. Of course the rut takes some excess off of them as well. And then there's my answer of "who knows" that I seem to rely on pretty heavily.

I hear that.

Hopefully they will be working harder at it than I have too. Just ask Limb. It always comes down to my weight.
