Bow or Gun

i have been turkey hunting since age 9 and i am 16 now. i have shot three birds in my life 2 jakes and a rather big tom but i feel like adding a little difficulty to it. i had a rough deer season this fall and i feel like i need to get the bow back out to gain some confidence. what do you think gun or bow?

I am going to get one tag for bow, and one for my ML shotgun.

Kinda depends on the area you hunt. Two years now I have filled my tag within 3 hours opening day, only to have my second tag go unfilled, lol. If you feel confident about hunting during the 4th season, go for it with your bow on 1, 2, or 3rd season. If you don't fill your tag take your gun out on the 4th season. WARNING, I took my first archery tom last year, now my shotgun is obsolete, cept for pheasants!!!! I will not go back to shotgun for spring birds, may pull out the recurve though, hehehe. I will scout this year and buy my tag when I know the toms are ready to be called. I'm guessing with the mild weather 1st season is going to be hot, but I'm no expert, that's just my guess.

I think I am going to take out the Mossberg 835 again this year, last year was my second year out and first year carrying a gun. I did take 2 jakes and had a blast! This year I just don't have time to practice with my bow before season so that is why I am leaning towards the gun. Also my brother is going to video me hopefully taking a bird this spring, should be great!!!!

a bird with a bow is no easy chore. if you had a tough bow season and need a confidence booster shooting 3-d's might be easier than shooting a turk. honestly bird hunting with a bow can be pretty frustrating. figuring out where to whack em is one of the more difficult tasks - besides getting them in range. don't get me wrong i really like bow hunting turkeys but be fore warned its not a piece of cake. if you go with bow make sure you check out other links on shot placement. limb seems to have it figured out. i am trying to take notes from him...

If you need your confidence back there's know better way then a 3 1/2" mag in the head and neck region.

I'v hunted them both way's and the bow thing is alot tougher!!
If you just want to take a bird I would gun hunt.

I have decided to try both out also. I will be hunting 3 states so I assume there should be some time to at least try and fill the bow tag. I have heard how difficult it can be so I don't have my hopes set to high. But I will always have the old SP-camo 10 gauge for backup.

I went with my bow last year and shot my first spring bird. I didn't find it as much fun as chasing them with the shotgun, I think I will go back to that this year

I got my first bow bird last spring also, a double bearded JAKE.

Oh well, it was nice to get an arrow in one. It is a whole new ball game compared to gun hunting and will really try your patience at times. To me it was a much greater reward and I have to tell you I had more close encounters with wildlife last spring than I've ever had turkey hunting before. I'm toting the bow again this year but may get a landowners for gun season "undecided". It could never get boring turning those rubbernecks into jellyheads!

Bow all the way. I have killed a too many with a gun and cant find the challange in it any more.. I do miss the running and gunning but I love the challange with the bow...

Ditto....except.....last Spring I had a Tom working away from the blind and gobbling every ten steps...I did want my gun in the worst way.

The rain the night before left the timber floor perfect for a sneak. I couldn't stand it anymore and grabbed for the zipper to the door of the Double Bull. He finally landed in his strutt zone and was without company. With a gun this would have been as done as sticking him with a fork.

I belly crawled to a hinged downfall and could see him in full strutt at 30 yards. Problem was I had to position myself for a bow shot. I snaked through the downed tree trying to maintain good cover the whole time. Finally I was to my knees at 30 yards and starting to raise up for a shot. While at half draw our eye's met each other's and the deal was over. Putt, putt, putt...busted, but a great memory all the same. A half hour sneak was over in an instant. I guess that's why they call it hunting. You gotta love it!

This year I'm getting one tag of each with the new Spring regulations. Hopefully one will take some copper and one will take a broadhead. It's all good!

Bow all the way! Have a new Switchback XT to play with!

At least until the DNR allows the use of handguns for turkeys. Which , judging by the way our deer seasons are going should only be a year or two!

I once missed 4 toms with my bow...all within about an hour in the same afternoon

As much as I would've liked a gun with me that afternoon, it's now one of my turkey hunting memories I talk about most fondly. When the arrow finally found it's mark about 2 weeks later, it made the memory all that much sweeter.

But I'm with Blake...one bow and one ML shotgun

Tay I think you should get a gun for third, We can bow hunt in the mornings that week and then take the guns when we head to the cabin that weekend!!!

You need to ask Limbchicken about his first season out with a bow.

It was more than a little frustrating for him up in NE Iowa. So frustrating we made a trip back to the jeep to put the bow away. After you ask him about that, ask him how it is going now.
