Cabelas coming to Newton

The rumor of Cabelas coming to Iowa has flown around for a couple years now and has about reached the status of a Bigfoot sighting. I have heard they settled on just about every town located near I-80 at one time or another. However I am getting multiple hands down, no bull, written in blood reports that Cabelas has finalized a deal to build in Newton at the 168mm exit. I didnt read it personally but the story is that the Jasper Co board of supervisors had something in their minutes about it in the paper and that the developer has met with the State Patrol in regards to traffic patterns, etc. This is where Rusty Wallace's race track is being built and a large truck stop and hotel also. I have not heard of a timeline though. I am a little surprised that nobody has posted on this yet if its true.

If so, that would put it about 15 minutes from my doorstep. If I am a little scarce around here for a while its because I am preparing my Chapter 11 paperwork.

Could be, I really do not know for sure. But I find it peculiar that a large retail store would choose to locate in an area that figures to lose it's major employer, Maytag, in the relatively near time frame. I think it would be good news for Newton, don't get me wrong, I am just a little surprised because I would have thought that Cabela's market research would steer it elsewhere.

Cabelas' marketing people could be thinking that a race track would draw their kind of people, REDNECKS, hee haw.

i'm sure the one next to the track in kansas city is busy as hell durring race season. not sure if the maytag situation would factor in much. they aren't wanting to build in newton because of the in-town sales. could be worth the gamble, if the track takes off. should be easy to get workers. the rumor have been going on forever about them wanting to build along I-80, close to I-35, the track is just the steady draw of people it needs. even if you don't hunt, what else ya gonna do before/after the race in newton?

Tour the wrestling museum that is moving to Waterloo?

I thought the same thing when they chose the location here in Michigan about 5 years ago. They built in a small town about 15 miles south of Ann Arbor and about 40 miles west of Detroit.

Doesn't matter, the place is packed 24/7. Drive by on a weekday afternoon and the lot is only half full. You would think nobody in this state works. Newton is close enough to Des Moines that it will be packed, don't even think about going on the weekends the first couple years.

Watch it with the career change if you're not in high school or college...that place is great but they don't pay SQUAT! I had 2 offers last summer with the one in Prarie Du Chien and the one in Rogers, MN...both of them offered to start me out at 9 bucks an hour..with a college degree and 5 years military..the guy in Prarie Du Chien told me that a lot of people that work there want to work there so bad that they go get a second job at McDonalds or the gas station to make ends meet. They said I could work my way up to dept manager and make 28-30,000 in 3-4 years they said..tight wads. They also have a very hard time giving you 2 days off in a row...not cool. If you like to hunt...unless you're at the top, you'll be working your butt off during hunting season....also not cool.

Ummm, remember our 18 month bet? I predict your the one thats going to be getting me the discount if they build it fast enough. An employee at Owatonna told me their discount was 20% if I remember right....I'll pick up your application for you.

Oh, and dont forget, poker night Tuesday, 7pm. If'n your not there, we might all come lookin fer ya...

Daver they do not depend on locals to shop at the store that is why it is built on the interstate. They depend on locals to work there, so what better place to be than Newton with all the potential workers? I have seen Cabela's list of stores to be completed through 2007 and there is none on there in Iowa (except the Omaha Store) so I suspect it would be in 2008.

Iowa1 - good point, I knew they would get good traffic along the interstate, but I still would have guessed that they needed the local support too. At any rate, I hope they get it.

O.K. with the Whirlpool announcement this morning it took approximately 10 minutes for the rumor to start that the 1:00 press conference will announce the Newton-Cabelas connection.

So I guess its wait and see time

We are supposed to get a Cabelas in the near future. The land has been purchased ,so I am told. Bass Pro built a new store here a year ago and it is GREAT. I think the trend is wherever Bass Pro is... a Cabelas will soon follow. (Omaha for example) Not sure what all the Whirlpool talk is, but I heard on the radio no jobs lost here in Tulsa and they might add some next year.

I can't say how I know this....but I know FOR A FACT that this rumor is true. The announcement should come in a couple of months with construction starting soon after.
