Cased gun question

I know the law is that if you are carrying a gun on an ATV it has to be in a case. (even with a weapons permit)

I was told that you can carry an uncased gun on an ATV or UTV with a CCW as long as its private property... The law states that you can not carry while on a atv/snowmobile on PUBLIC ground, (roadways, public trails and riding parks, and waterways like running a snowmobile on the river). So as long as its private property then youre ok. So if youre doing field work Im sure you would be ok but once you hit the road from one field to the next Im not sure, I would think it would be just the same as driving a regular vehicle but who knows

As an armored car officer i have an iowa permit to carry weapons concealed and professionally and one thing everyone is forgetting is it also matters what type of weapon you are carrying if you have a pistol in a holster it doesnt matter where you drive your tractor or atv, a pistol indicates personal protection, a shotgun or a rifle indicates a hunter, when i bowhunt i still have my pistol on my side even on public ground, you never know what can happen especially in the woods, lol and my pistol has a 4.5 inch barrel so its a legal hunting firearm! The laws are common sense they wernt written with the intent of having someone walk dwn the road with a shotgun strapped to there leg but under the new laws iowa is a shall carry state a permit is good for concealed or open. Open is frowned upon but if u are on your own land on your own atv or whatever u dont need a permit period to carry a weapon on your own property regardless if your hunting or not. Hope this info helped and didnt confuse anyone.

I'm pretty sure you can't carry a hand gun with you while you are bow hunting. Thats even if you have a permit to carry. Unless I don't know something about police officers but if that's the case, if police officers can carry while off duty that's bs.

Show…
I don't see why people keep calling the iowa permit to carry a 'ccw' permit. It is not a 'concealed' carry permit it is a 'carry' permit. Meaning you can carry whatever (any gun) however (open or concealed) that you wish. Of course there's restrictions with federal buildings and schools.

If you have an Iowa Permit to Carry your weapon can be loaded and uncased in your vehicle while driving around, hunting, or otherwise. You cannot carry while bow hunting regardless of a permit (weird law...but that's how it is).

Legally I can go into walmart with my AR strapped to my back and go shopping. Probably get a lot of weird looks and hte 'that guy has a gun!!!!!!' type comments...but you can do it. If walmart has a 'no-gun' policy they can ask you to leave. If you do not...you are risking a tresspass ticket.

I don't know who is tellign their students (or if they are ....probably not...people like to dispurse false information anyhow) that your Iowa permit means you need to keep your weapon concealed...cuz it does not need to be per the law. It's up to you to make the decision on whether to open or concealed carry.

You cannot carry while bow hunting, correct. The exception would be during late muzzy season...if you had a muzzy tag you could carry your handgun (as long as it is .357 or larger and had a 4.0" bbl or longer). But, during the early bow split, regardless of your personal safety feelings...you can't carry legally per the existing law.

You can also carry .357 and larger during the shotgun seasons also.

Not to totally change venues, but AZ has the same law for archery because, wait for it...people were actually shooting deer and elk with pistols and then sticking an arrow through them and then tagging them with their archery tags. There is one unofficial exception to the law and that is if you are archery hunting (deer, javelina, etc.) down near the US/Mexico border. I've had several WMs (COs in Iowa) say that if catch you archery hunting with a pistol on your hip or concealed somewhere, they won't say anything to you unless its a "scoped TC strapped across your chest" (his words). I would think a CO or LEO would use some discretion/common sense if you happen to be hunting in a known meth lab area or other questionable situation.

Pg. 24 in the iowa hunting and trapping regulations handbook says and i quote " hunters may not carry a handgun while hunting under an archery tag, unless they have an unfilled transportation tag for a season that allows handguns." So???? Does that mean if it is after the split and i have an unused gun season 1 tag it is legal to carry a pistol while bow hunting?

No, because that tag would be expired. You need to have a tag with valid season dates.

So I can drive around during shotgun season with a shotgun loaded with slugs, uncased and the DNR is OK with that? Why don't you try that next season and let us know how that turns out for you.

Yes you can. Friend of mine did just that and had the DNR check him. The gun was in the case just not zipped. The officer didn't like it but really couldn't do anything about it.

The way the sheriff put it in the class I took was basically what is safer? A group of guys standing at the end of a hunt jacking every round through the chamber or everyone placing their gun in the vehicle and moving to the next spot.

I carry my 44 when I was shotgun hunting. Left it in the holster all the time.

Yes you can....I did it, was checked, showed my conceal permit, and on my way I went. All the DNR officer said was.....we are in the beginning of a bigger problem. I said..."Yep from the non-majority who dont pay attention to laws anyway"

And my gun was loaded, one in the chamber and sitting next to me in the truck uncased.

Not a thing they can do about it because the law didn't differentiate between hunting and non-hunting....gotta love manipulating the law!
