Cool pics and info on Iowa bobcats

I have never had the pleasure of seeing one while in the field hunting. Maybe some day when they learn to swim across the Des Moines River.

I was thinking I read only 2000 estimated in Iowa as of last year. That seems low to me. I just saw my fourth one last Wed. afternoon comming home from shed hunting. The wife had a female and three or four kits cross the road in front of her early last fall. They are cool to see, but they have to put a hurtin' on the small game and turkeys.

They really are neat to see in the wild. Any info on possible seasons on them in the future? It kind of seems the rumors have been floating around on a season in the near future.

Since there is no open season on the in Iowa (yet), what do you Iowa trappers do when you get one in your set up? Hold 'em down long enough to get their leg out and turn them loose and hope for the best?

Just about every trapper I know caught one this year. Some were snared, some in conibears. On one of the snared cats, it was still alive and healthy, so the trapper called the DNR, and the agent and the trapper turned it loose.

They might take some pheasant and other small game but I really don't mind. Maybe when they get the numbers up I'll change my mind, but for now I'll share.
I hope to see some.

Funny you should mention bobcats...

this morning I looked out the kitchen window and a big tom bobcat stepped out into the driveway!

I ran to get the camera but he slipped across into cover before I got the camera!

Pretty cool to see critters like that right in my yard!
