Could they find you???

I broke my ankle while on my way to my stand tuesday a.m. I was able to call my wife as she hunts with me and she knows the timbers we hunt. My brother-in-law and friend were impressed that she knew exactly where I was and she led them to me. All I told her was that I was near the far flat near the DNR guys' land border and I had also told her that I was going to this flat when I had left the house. I was in some very rugged country, steep timber ravines, a 1/4 mile from my truck, and out of yelling distance for anybody to hear me. We as hunters have always been told to let our loved ones know where we are. Made me realize that if you are a hunter that the nonhunter spouse should be shown the timbers you hunt and where your stand locations are and however else you describe a spot. COULD you describe to your loved ones where you were if hurt and could they find you if you didn't have a phone or if the phone had got broken during your injury???
 
Luckily for me, my wife loves to mushroom hunt, and knows the timibers that I hunt pretty well. If something like this happened to myself, I'm confident that my wife would know my general location. Thankfully my wife pays pretty close attention to her surroundings.
 
My wife can barely find our house in broad daylight, let alone where my tree stands are.

I always let someone know where I am, and both my fiance and a few of my good buddies no where my stand locations are. Something I have always practiced since I hunt by myself alot.

Sorry to hear about the ankle, glad to hear that they got you out of there and at least it was at the end of the season.
 
It has been at least 5 years since a customer of mines brother went out scouting for deer sign before season opened. He parked his truck way back in a field where no one could see it. He had climbed up in a tree and fell and broke his back. He laid there for three days and wrote in a journal about how much he loved his family and how stupid he was to not tell anybody where he had gone. The family and authorities searched and searched but couldn't find him. He died of exposure on the 3rd day and they found his truck and body a few days later.
 
Most times I head out, nobody (including me

sometimes) knows where I will be hunting. I have multiple properties I like to hunt and sometimes change plans halfway there.
 
She knows where I hunt, knows it can get pretty rugged, wouldn't know where to look for me, and wouldn't let anyone know, accept for the life insurance provider...
 
fortunately i give very long and detailed stories so my wife would be able to find her way through the woods. but i usually dont go alone, but when i do i take my cell phone
 
I always tell my wife the general property I am planning to hunt. I have two Garmin Rhino 130's that my son and I use to communicate with when hunting. If hunting alone, I leave one in the truck. The units keep track of each other and it should be pretty easy to find me if I should have an accident. It was also kind of handy when I would borrow it to a hunting partner who had a tendency to roam around. I could always tell where he was and had been through out the day by the cookie crumb trails it kept. The units send location when the talk button is pushed. If you are not talking much I could still see where he had really been all day.

I usually hunt with my dad but when I don't my wife wouldn't have a clue where to find me.

I don't want to die that way...nor do I want to put my family in a position of not being able to find me for days!

With radios and cell phones, online aerial maps etc....there is no excuse IMO.

I think it would be a rare individual who doesn't have someone, somewhere who cares about them...so even if you don't care about yourself...have enough respect for those that love you...to let them know where you'll be

nobody would know where I was exactly, but the timbers up here arent all that big. A small search for my pickup to find which piece Im on and it shouldnt take long to find me.
 
I'd be okay if I was hunting one of our normal stands. However, I'm getting more adventurous and scouting out places for my climber and spend a lot of time walking and just checking things out. If I went down with my climber I'd be screwed too.

My wife hates it when I tell her where I'm going (she's obviously not thinking about this topic). We keep a calendar on the fridge to keep track of family stuff and if I know where I'm going I jot down the section name in the corner. That way my dad or brothers would easily know where to start looking.
 
My wife and son know where most of my stands are, and I've told my wife if I don't come back to have a GPS search done on my cell phone (which I always carry on vibrate!).

yea.... same thing with my mom. but i go hunting with my dad and we have 2-way radios so it works well.
