DNR Poaching Deer

Knowing that the DNR does this makes one think, or at least it should.

About two weeks ago, I was driving down a gravel road and saw a decent 10 point standing in a hay field next to a brushy waterway. He was statue still and stayed that way as I slowed down and backed up to get a better view. I was looking at him with the binocs for so long and he was so still I thought the DNR guys would be yanking open my car door and dragging me out. He finally raises and lowers his head and I'm thinking it could be a robot. Then, he trots off. I wished him well, because he better get smart quick!

I was watching Dateline or 20/20 one time when the DNR had an electronic decoy out. The deer moved it's head and twitched it's tail. They were catching people shinning and poaching. Got the one guy for drunk driving too with his 3 year old kid asleep in the back seat! It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on TV. I too didn't know the Iowa DNR did that stuff.

Kudos to the IDNR for using every possible means to catch poachers! I hope they use a lot of tools such as decoys and that eventually it will slow illegal activity!

I read once where they even caught a sherriff shooting at a decoy!

The IBA recently donated $1,000 to DNR for some new high tec equipment to help combat the poaching problem.

I totally applaud the DNR for attempting to stop poachers. Chances are, they won't stop it completely, but even to make a dent in it, or deter people from doing it, will only help the rest of the legal hunters in Iowa.

2 summers ago I backed up to get a better look at a hawg of a moose standing in a swamp 300 yards off a road. Only after we looked at it for awhile did we realize there was no velvet on the 60" looking rack on it's head. We drove off thinking the dnr may have a hayday with dummies ripping at it.

I have a good friend who works for the DNR and is also an avid bow hunter. We were dicussing the poaching problem and he said that it is estimated that 30-50% of the B&C bucks are poached each year in Iowa. I don't know where he got the numbers,or if they are correct, but I was shocked to say the least. Anyone else ever heard anything like that?

Wouldn't suprise me if it was that high.

If that was the decoy, probably wasn't to good for the DNR's cause to post a picture of it.

I remember reading an article a while back stating that KDWP (Kansas Department) had to "downsize" their decoys from trophy-sized bucks to smaller ones. Get this, charged poachers were winning their court cases stating they were inappropriately tempted!

I have a hard time believing in our criminal justice system sometimes.

The world we live in...poaching is poaching no matter how big the d$*! deer is. One of the places I hunt, which has always had very large deer, has had numerous deer picked off while feeding out in the field. I wish I could take a look it this somebody's garage to see some of the racks.
