I heard a rumor that this year we will be able to hunt the early muzzleloader season along with 1st shotgun season. Just wondering if there was any truth to that.

Only as a landowner.

There was an attempt to do just that, among other things, but thanks to all those that made thier voices heard thru the efforts of IW and the IBA this is all that was changed as far as EML:

Only hunters who have purchased an any sex license for the early muzzleloader season will be allowed to purchase antlerless licenses for the early muzzleloader season. The any-sex quota stays at 7,500.

4. Simplifies who can get antlerless licenses. Hunters can obtain up to 3 county specific antlerless licenses for any season before October 1 and an unlimited number after October 1 and they can obtain 3 licenses for the January antlerless season in those counties that are open before October 1 and an unlimited after October 1 with 2 exceptions:
The exceptions are:
1. Hunters can obtain paid licenses (either any-sex or antlerless) for only 1 of the 2 shotgun seasons.
2. Only hunters who have purchased an any sex license for the early muzzleloader season will be allowed to purchase antlerless licenses for the early muzzleloader season. The any-sex quota stays at 7,500.

I must be still asleep this morning. I read this as if you use one of your either sex tags during EM then you can anterless one of the shotgun seasons. So a guy could get an either sex for Archery, an either sex for EM, and then party hunt 1 of the 2 Shotgun seasons with antlerless tags. Since you can( which I don't like) fill others tags, you can still shot bucks, if someone in the party still has either sex unfilled.

You could be right but... as I understand it, if you buy an EML tag...you can't hunt in either shotgun seasons...period. Maybe WJS could spell that out for us as far as the antlerless tag are concerned. I don't see anything in the current wording that would change that...but I am easily confused

So can I early muzzleload with an antlerless only tag, get an any sex archery and still hunt late season muzzleloder any sex?

they way i read it, is the only way you can get an early muzzle antlerless, is if you also have the early muzzle anysex tag as well. not sure if you could still get a late muzzle tag

Obviously there are a lot of people confused about the new rules like me. From the early M/L stand point, the way I read into it is, you have to buy a anysex Early M/L tag to buy the anterless tag which means you are done for any sex gun tags but you can purchase doe tags only for the other gun seasons. Only 1 doe tag for either shotgun season though not both.
Basically the any sex # of tags have not changed. 1 gun any sex and 1 bow any sex and that is it. If wanting to spend the money and take out the does you could actually hunt all 5 seasons this year with gun/bow of choice.

Hopefully I am reading into it wrong because sounds like a lot of poached bucks during the shotgun seasons IMO

WJS can you help us clear some of this up and make it less confusing?

I think that the point is with party hunting there wouldn't be poached bucks just bucks tagged by another member in the party with an anysex tag. The way I read it you can get a buck during EML and still hunt either of the shotgun seasons and shoot a buck as long as somebody you are hunting with has a tag for it. Of course you can also get an archery buck tag.

Assuming you had a group of shotgun hunters you hunt with you could technically shoot multiple bucks in any year under the party hunting system though.

Unless they have drastically changed things, if you buy an early muzzle loader tag, the first one must be any sex. Then you can buy extra antlerless tags for the EML season. If you buy that anysex tag then you may NOT buy any tags for either shotgun season. You can get an any sex tag for bow season and any additional antlerless tags available. You can also buy late muzzle loader antlerless tags only, not anysex. You can also get doe tags for the special late season and the Thanksgiving season. If you are elligable for a landowner tag you can use that for an anysex tag for EML and still hunt one fo the shotgun seasons by buying an anysex tag and getting the extra landowner doe tag, or you could reverse the order and buy the EML anysex tag and use the landowner tags for either shotgun season and still party hunt but only on your own property. Boy that was exhausting! Shouldn't need a law degree to fugure out what tags to buy.

The rule does change who can get antlerless licenses. Any hunter can get:

up to 3 county specific antlerless licenses for any season before October 1 and an unlimited number after October 1 and they can obtain 3 licenses for the January antlerless season in those counties that are open before October 1 and an unlimited after October 1 with 2 exceptions:
The exceptions are:
1. Hunters can obtain paid licenses (either any-sex or antlerless) for only 1 of the 2 shotgun seasons.
2. Only hunters who have purchased an any sex license for the early muzzleloader season will be allowed to purchase antlerless licenses for the early muzzleloader season. The any-sex quota stays at 7,500.

So yes, if you get an any-sex license for the early muzzleloader season you could get antlerless tags in 1 of the shotgun seasons and the late muzzleloader season as well.

I hope that clears up the change.
