Fields or Timber?

Alright... I am not having the best luck so far. So far all I have seen is does. I mostly have been hunting on edges of timbers next to a corn field. I don't know about you guys but to me it sounds like a good idea? Or would you be hunting deep in the timbers? The acorns are on the ground and I think I might give that a try since I have a few stands in areas like that but want to know what you think...

I would be in the timber any day anytime of the hunting season until it is 20 below zero for a week on end then I will move to the field edges.

Will things change once we get a hard frost? It seems like they are hitting the hay awful hard right now. In my area anyway.

I think your best bet is somewhere in between the timber and the field. Theyve gotta go through the timber if their going to the field.

Tough to harvest a mature deer in the open anytime but so many factors come into play. Many "secluded" areas will have mature deer out on the fields before dark, others may not until it is past dark. This time of year, I hunt the edges where I can watch a long ways and then if I see a shooter in a certain area I'll use the climber and if no go I move on. With Corn that is hard to do.If it were me, hunt about 80 yards inside the timber on the way to corn/beans. Problem with corn is they may be IN IT!!! Look for a small area with rubs, even small ones this time of year could be big bucks, and set up on the staging areas. Edges are where you'll find them, where hard woods meet pines or thick meets thin. It will happen...tough right now though.

I've been huting in the timber. Had allot of acorns but they seem to be pretty much gone now. I haven't seen any bucks just does which was ok when I had doe tags. To much corn up they don't need to move around when they can bed down in the corn specially if it butts up to an alfalfa field.

Personally I don't like to put a lot of pressure on em this time of year. If your hunting right now , I think your best result is gonna be to get as close to their beds as possible. I don't see a lot of daylight movement by bucks this time of year so the closer to their beds you get the better chance of seeing em in light.

I'm seeing bucks and does while hunting field edges but I'm hunting standing beans right now. I don't like hunting standing corn all that much. I do like picked corn though. I prefer the edge during pre-rut and travel funnels anytime.

i have been hunting the edge of standing cornhave seen lots of does & several bucks mostly spikes to 2 1/2 year olds.but have sen a couple in the 120 to 130 mark.i have also hunted alfafa mostly does.

tonight I went out to our evergreen patch to the box stand. Did not see any bucks but a few does. I was glad just to be out of the rain and inside that box stand.

I would just add this...

It's a full moon right now so deer are more likely to move late in the night.

In the past few days I have driven back and forth to Cedar Rapids and clear down to Columbus MO and back...in the evening no less and saw not one single deer!

I don't have to tell you that is a bunch of driving.... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

My son hunted tonight and saw a few does in the open in a hidden area but I think after this front passes thru and we have some frosty mornings things will pickup, regardless of where you sit.... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Buddy, if you think the Full moon causes late movement, I think we can also agree that ther is a big NOON-Midday movement. I pulled 5 cameras last night- only 2 day soak- 745 photos- several bucks, scraping, feeding and chasing-50% were daylight hours.....This to me is the rut warm up ei. false rut. EVERY full moon plus or minus 5 days either way is the BEST time for daytime MATURE BUCK mowement. Now add in the cooling weather and a bonus light rain, and things get hopping in the woods.Last nights sit was from 5pm- dark and yeilded 6 differnt bucks and 8 doe/fawns. Tree stand is in an apple tree and I had to keep turning around sooo much that apples kept fallin off the tree and I felt like I was BAITING. Every time an apple fell to the ground another deer ran from cover to gobble it up-- an utterly awsome experiance.
