First Shotgun Season Snow?

Hardwood11

It is going to be a good fall!
The forecast says possible snow on the first shotgun season. In Minnesota that would be a huge plus. How much does it affect the deer movement in Iowa.

Anyone know the forecasted wind direction for Saturday?

SSW with rain snow mix for NE Iowa on Saturday. That was as of 10 minutes ago, so who knows how many times that may change.

As far as the snow and rain and it's effect on movement. IMO you can throw all of that out the window during Iowa shotgun season. Unless you own 1000 acres with no one hunting and 0 pressure, the deer will be moving in most places  They get pushed pretty hard in most parts of the state.

FWIW, the deer have been on food hard the last few days, and with the colder temps forecasted I would be sitting over your best food source this weekend if you don't plan on pushing. They are pounding the beans right now. Good luck

been looking at it off and on last day or so. Looks like the western side could get a inch or two according to the weather guys in omaha. Glad I am doing second season.

Lack of snow means hopefully more deer make it through the orange army, but also means more trespassers with no way to tell they were there. I for one am glad for no snow, because for once I don't have to walk through 3 feet of snow to get to my stand and be sweating by the time I get there.

As a 2nd season hunter, I always like it when the weather is nasty for the 1st season hunters. I feel most of the 1st season hunters in my area are fair weather hunters and will eat the tag than go out in nasty weather. I know that's not true with all, but that's what I've observed around my shotgun land..

As for weather impact on deer, I concur with Dedgeez.. They will be running hard around the state.. Little bit of deer redistribution going on the next 3 weeks around the state..

Just my opinion, it seems like the first snow of the year makes the deer a little more jumpy than usual. Not sure why but that is what i have noticed.

I was thinking about this also.

I think more fair weather hunters will be out pushing and that will mean more deer being shot.

I hope they stay hidden so less get shot.

My dad and I were just talking about this the other day. It's not that I'm against gun hunting.... as long as it's done the right way and keeping in fair chase. Growing up in NW Iowa, that's not always the case as I'm sure everyone else has had a little taste of that as well. The longer it stays brown, the better IMO. If that white stuff can hold off until closer to Christmas, you will be amazed at the number of bigger bucks you will see next season. Not to mention, the more sheds to find!! :drink1:

We have rain forecasted all day, pretty excited at that thought. Have to take a plastic bag for my muzzleloader.

Last year, first weekend of second season was rain/sleet/snow, pushed all day and saw 2 deer total. The next weekend pushed the same places and saw 10+ deer. So maybe weather doesn't "matter" but i would rather hunt on a nice cold still day, just my opinion tho:) o and btw i like what SCOFFIN said "As a 2nd season hunter, I always like it when the weather is nasty for the 1st season hunters.":way::way::)

Seems like storms coming now on weekends. Snow forecast,,maybe N. Iowa,,rain elsewhere. I'm rootin for the rain! Next weekend too. although, if DNR thinks not enough hunting went on,,will extend the season,,as has done in the past. Get them deer dead,,as they say..

Deer/weather

Any other time, I would not care if it rained during the gun season, as I prefer to bow hunt. However, with a tag for the first gun season I am hoping for snow and not rain (one prediction has a half inch of rain) ish!

Either way I just hope we see deer!

Forecast possible even an inch and a half for S Iowa..WooHoooo! My land needs all the water it can get, to bring the creeks and ponds back, and soak the tree roots..
