Generators

TP- I ended up with the Coleman 6250/5000 10hp but it had the Tecumseh motor. Runs things fine except the power cord for the transfer switch I had needed a different end. Anyway, I have water and can run the freezer and refrigerator.
I am having trouble getting the furnace to run- the fan starts to power up then stops- doesn't seem to like the generator. 46 degrees in the house this AM.

Just a suggestion on something I wish I would have done when I bought my generator. If you have any use for or are inclined to do some welding, purchase a portable gas welder. Definetly more cost but more uses. Nice to have a welder at home.

pharmer, I was just listening to a briggs and stratton generator guy on WHO radio, your exact question was asked. It seems that if there is a circuit board in the furnace controls it doesn't like the voltage fluctuations from the generator.

He said that if you hook up a resistive load to work the generator harder the voltage gets more stable and almost always gets the furnace working.

A resistive load is one that heats up like an electric stove or space heater ect.

Good luck!

My furnace does fine on the generator, but it is a pretty small furnace. My house is only around 1000 sq ft. I can tell when the furnace, fridge and both freezers are running, the generator bogs for a second or two then comes back up. I'm posting this with generator juice for my computer, DSL modem and wireles router. According to what I've seen a furnace blower takes more watts to start that a fridge or a freezer 2300 vs 800. One thing you might try is taking out your filter. It will let the blower run a little easier. Not a good idea for long term though.

Who ever brought to attention about having a double throw disconnect switch to prevent backfeeding the transformer to us linemen, THANK YOU!!!
Off to bed for a little rest and then back at it.
Everyone stay safe!!!

I'm a lineman for a REC coop in IL. Guys just for the record the only safe way to hookup a generator is with a double throw switch. Not a main breaker or plugin. For those who don't know a 120v. backfeed through the transfomer puts 7200v. back out online. Please hook these up safely.

My buddy had me hooked up and running by 4:30, and when I came back at 7:30 it was nice and toasty, which is a pretty nice feeling after 4 days. The 5kw Coleman seemed to handle everything just fine. He had a meter hooked up as he flipped on various breakers and even with fridge, freezer, furnace, and some lights going it was running no problem. Its not the cadillac of generators and if I had more time to shop and money to spend I could have surely done better, but its definately getting the job done.

Having one of these hooked up and running right now sounds like a real good thing...

if you don't have power it may be a while based on the NWS forecast and Governors message
