Just thought I would share. I moved to Iowa last June and have been preparing our farm ground for Deer and Pheasant. I am very interested and excited about QF&GM (Quality Fish & Game Management) this include deer, ducks, quail, grouse, pheasants, trout etc... I work with engineers on a daily basis and used several Engineering and GIS tools to get a 3d representation of our ground along with the ability to create polygons to represent our management practices.
I used to use 3dem and download free terrain models then download a high res GEO TIFF arial from the iowa graphic map server to get them arranged correctly over the terrain model.
Example Green Island
This got me the desired 3d representation of what I wanted but in order to create the polygons I wanted, this required moving everything to another program.... Too much work.
Anyway, I had been using google earth ever since it came out to just play around and was disapointed at the resolution for most if not all Iowa rural counties, but never thought to check into it's enhanced version (translation $$$$). Well for 20 bucks a year I got everything I wanted.
You get a set of tools with the 20 dollar a year subscription that allows you the ability to overlay arial photos as well as polygons.
I love the ability to fly around your property in 3d. I have mapped all my management plans, deer bedding areas, stand locations.
I even used their polygon option to build a set of wind indicators that I can toggle on and off, so I can see visually where my scent will be carried across my hunting grounds as I plan my hunt for the following day. This is really a great tool when used in concert with the weather channel's hour by hour detailed forcast that gives the wind directions. I can guage which stand will provide the best option to remain undected as far as my scent is concerned.
Its a great way to manage your hunting ground, whether it public or private.
It has been a big help with my QDM and pheasant program for our limited acres
again just thought I'd share. Not sur if this sort of thing has been posted in the past. Sorry if its a repeat post
