Hand Cannon - Deer

I would go with a Smith or a Ruger. I have friends that own a Taurus and none of them are overly pleased with the gun. JMO

No such thing as too big of a gun for deer Ghost, the end result is always the same

I have shot several deer with the Ruger .480. It is an awesome round built into a really good gun. I have it topped with a red dot and have fired many a round through with no problems. I have killed deer from 30, 40 out to 65 yards or so. Recoil is not bad at all....and talk about downrange power! Looking at taking the red dot off and putting on a variable scope to get alittle more range out of her. The .480 is an impressive caliber.....surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

I would have to say when speaking of handguns.....there really isn't such a thing as "too much gun". Bigger rounds knock em down harder and punch bigger holes.

On my .44 mag Ruger Redhawk I had a 2x Leupold. Nice setup. I sold it to friend who was aching to have it. Personally I prefer to use open sights. When I hunt with a hand gun I'm doing it for the added challenge in hunting. I don't expect to get and won't take a shot any further than I shoot a bow. If your wanting a longer range handgun and using a scope then I agree that a larger caliber would better suit your needs than a .357 mag.

As for the brands you mentioned, I like both Ruger and S&W. If I were buying a long range handgun I would consider a Thompson Center as well. I know it's a single shot but the ones I have shot have been excellent weapons.

Ive got a Thompson center .357 You can shoot .38s and .357 just for fun. For hunting I use the Magnums but for a bit more punch you can also shoot the Maximums. It is an extremely accurate handgun using a scope or open sights. They are single shots but with practice they can be reloaded extremely fast.

I would go with the Ruger .454 and a red dot scope, you shouldn't worry about the second shot when you make the first one count. I own a Ruger .454 and have also shot the Taurus Raging Bull, both are good but prefer the Ruger. The taurus are known for barrels cracking due to a lesser steel, I'm not sure if they fixed the problem but You should buy american made. Go with the Ruger

If it were me I would go with the smith or the ruger .44. Plenty of gun for deer and they can be deadly accurate.

JMO,

Good luck.

The .454 Casull is great for hunting whitetails. I used a borrowed Freedom Arms chambered in .454 with a 2x6 Bushnell 3200 Firefly scope on it for an antlerless whitetail hunting in Alabama 2 years ago. The mature does down there only weigh 90 lbs and I think I could have killed one with a spit ball but the Casull was a lot more fun.

.44 mags and .480 rugers are nice (I’ve shot both) and will work on whitetails just fine but if you want to be Big and Bad and cannot swing a S&W 500, I’d recommend the Casull. Hearing protection is required and the recoil is big!

As far as the Raging Bull, it’s all about personal preference, any gun is great when it fits you, functions flawlessly and you can hit stuff with it.

My hunting rig is a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag with a 2x Leupold.

In the past I used an InterArms Verginian Dragoon 44mag nice.

Now I hunt early muzzle loader season with a T/C Encore Pistol in 209X50.
If you like to handgun hunt deer in Iowa this is the ticket!
I've been keeping an eye open for a 454 or 44 mag barrel and stock set for it.
