Harvest Data

This is a question perhaps best answered by Deer Biologist Willie Suchy.

Just wondering with the new reporting system in place...how long will it take for us to get harvest data?

I think the system is going to work great! I put the # in my cell ph and called from the field to report my sons Youth Season deer and it was a piece a cake!

Since the reporting is instant it would be nice to be able to follow progress thru each month and season.

Since it's going into a computer I would think almost daily reports would be available to our biologists.

Just curious if Willie can tell us when the harvest data will be available

Glad to hear the reporting experience went well for you. So far it seems to be working fairly well however some people seem to be having problems getting the data in without getting rolled over to an operator. We are currently trying to find out where the problems are in the process.

The data can be accessed by our data processing people directly at any time. I can not access the reports myself and will have to wait until they send them to me. (I am not behind the firewall.)

The current plan is for the data to be available within 48 hours after the close of the season. I'll try to keep people updated as the seasons go along.

I would be interested in hearing whether people have used the system and if and where they had problems.

My son and I registerd his deer via the online system and it was very easy. We had no problems at all. I do agree it would be neat to see a daily update on the IDNR site of the harvest data.

My call went perfectly and never had to go thru to an operator. Hopefully others will let you know if the system worked for them or not.

It will be picking up steam soon, so I hope they get any last minute glichs worked out.

If they do forward any data on to you Willie, it would be great to hear the status of the harvest...whenever you get it.

I know a few grumble about this a little but I think accurate harvest data is very important...an I can't imagine and easier way to get that data to our biologists.

Entered the 800# in the cell with voice dial "Dead Deer". I tested it and it rang through to a recording. I hope to use it many times this fall. Deffinately a step in the right direction.

DBL, how long was the number they gave you to print on the tag and did the recording give you a chance to listen again?

I tried to enter my sons harvest on the cell phone in the field, It said thank you for calling the IDNR Harvest reporting line and then it cut out and started telling me that I had entered an invalid entry. I thought I had accidently hit a button so I hung up and started over, It did the same thing again. I don't know why it did it but I entered it online the next day and it worked great. very easy to do and it just gave me a 9 digit # to write on the tag.

Super easy to use...and I think it is a step in the right direction.

I used it twice with my kids youth deer and it is very simple and very fast.

[/ QUOTE ] It is a clearly spoken 9 digit number with the option for them to repeat it. I have used it without any problems.

Yep...that's the deal! Worked like a charm for me

Last couple times I called in to register deer...I got to the point of keying in the # off my license and it says " the IDNR reporting system has encountered an error" and then it goes to a live person.

Nice gal...but little bit hard to understand between the popping gum and and little twang

First time I couldn't figure out that she was asking me "what state?"...kinda baffled me...Dah...not the IDNR I'm talking too!

The next time went a little better...except she said her puter was really slow...

Anyway...just feedback for WJS...little quirk in the system but no biggie. Pretty soon me and Miss Deer register/reporter...will be on a first name basis!

This weekend should be a test of the Harvest Reporting system!

Hopefully the system won't get overloaded

How to Report a Harvest

I'm also wondering when we will hear results from the Early Muzzleloader season and the Thanksgiving season??

I used my cell phone and it worked fine.

I was right in the middle of "reporting" and my cell ph went dead!

Stopped at a friends and used the online version which is certainly easier and faster.

Looks like things went fairly smoothly...so kudos to the IDNR and the reporting system!

This update is interesting...one person had a tag blow off, got stopped but was safe because they had just reported the kill!

Another interesting tidbit is that landowner reporting is extremely low...hmmm??

Hope we start to hear some results soon!

The only suggestion for the IDNR about the reporting system is to split the tag or have two tags. You have to have one tag on the deer to transport it and then turn around and write the license number down on another piece of paper, call the IDNR and write down the confirmation number and then transfer the confirmation number down on a tag that is already on the deer. It would be nice if they made a transportation tag and then another tag to affix once it has been reported and the confirmation number written down. It was no treat trying to get all those numbers in that little box when it was 15 degrees last weekend. Just my two cents worth!

(Raise hand... Stand up... and state...)

Hello, my name is Bugs and I'm an idiot. I put the wrong tags on two deer I killed last Saturday and reported them to the IDNR via cell phone. The next day, Sunday, while going through my hunting stuff I came across the tags I should have used the day before... so I reported those via the internet (on Sunday). The day after that, Monday morning, I called the IDNR customer service line and reported what I had done. The customer service rep. removed the incorrectly reported deer from the deer reporting system. No harm, no foul, although the customer service rep. told me she was required to report what I had done to my county CO and it's possible I might get cited. I haven't heard from my county CO, so I think I'm OK.

It was an honest mistake and I reported it as soon as I realized what I had done. My excuse... this year I put all my tags in a single folder and put that in my truck, then when I leave the truck I grab the tag I need, well Sat. morning I grabbed the wrong tags. In previuos years I've put the tags for each season in individual envelopes and kept track of them that way... I think I'll go back to that system.

Thinking about it though, the deer reporting system could tell a user, after entering the tag number "Hey idiot, your just entered a tag number for tag that is not valid for the season you are hunting. Go find the correct tag and try again." At least then I'd know I made a mistake sooner and would have not initially incorrectly reported the deer.

Oh well, live and learn.

You hit it on the head...I found that while my deer is hanging it is difficult to have to write in the cold, upside down, and all the while holding the pen upward so the ink still comes out.
