Harvest Reporting System

Seasons have been over for a couple weeks, wonder when we will get some preliminary numbers on harvest? Just scoured the DNR site but no mention yet. Anyone know when these will be released?

I did talk to a DNR agent on Wednesday (Jan. 31) and he said that they will soon (Middle to end of Feb.) put the number of deer killed. I told him that I would like to see a number from each county, but he thought that it would just be a total number of antlered and antlerless.

There was a article in the Ottumwa Courier this week about the deer population remaining the same. Willie Suchy stated that last years harvest was 211,000 and this year was slightly lower at 150,000. He also said that the new reporting system is not 100% accurate. ( who would of guessed that )

I would like to see the numbers too, but I dont trust them much. I think non-reporting was pretty high this year from what I heard from people.
I just spoke to my cousin who works for the DNR. He didnt have the exact numbers but did say that the number of landowner tags issued dropped from nearly 100,000 last year to around 30,000 this year. Hmmmm...wonder why that would be? By the way, the 30,000 number is about the number of LOT tags issued 5 years ago, prior to the introduction of the ELSI system which made it so easy for people to falsly aquire them.
Again, he was throwing out rough numbers but I'd say the new landowner registration accomplished its goal.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

Been wondering that myself since they would have known all the info the day after

It is unfortunate that they may not release information on a county by county basis...since there is such a huge difference across the state.

In some cases the kill may actually be up...which doesn't mean that the population went down...only surveys will help determine that.

If the herd was up by 20% and the kill up 10%...well you get the idea.

Where it's down...is it from less deer...or less access?

I'm sure Mr. Suchy will be busy analyzing all of this between now and next this summer!

Deer population remains steady

Why couldn't/wouldn't they release the numbers by county? Am I missing something? Besides my mind that is.

Perhaps they have reasoning that we aren't aware of and perhaps they will change their mind.

Best we not jump to any conclusions beforehand.

Surely there will be some changes open to public comment this spring via ICN meetings where we could voice our thoughts and hear the IDNR's as well.

Now WJS will be the man in the "hotseat"

Sure will be nice to talk to somone I respect

I know the Harvest Report was already posted in a recent thread but...

It appears to me that the report is well done (possible reporting inaccuracies aside) showing harvest information by county and seasons.

I'm often guilty of "pre-judging" the DNR so I just want to say well done!

Hopefully there will eventually be a higher % reporting...perhaps after a few people get "raided" and pay some fines for illegal deer due to not reporting.

After this system has been active for 3-5 years it will give both the DNR and us as hunters a better handle on managing our deer in our own specific counties.

Very cool getting to see some numbers for surrounding counties. Way to many button bucks reported though.

Looks like the DNR is moving in the right direction to me.

Thanks for posting that dbltree. That is pretty cool to see what was reported from county to county.

Ditto

That is alot of good info. I just skimmed it for now and didn't see what they thought the reporting rate was.

Some quick math, correct me if I'm wrong.

It looks like button bucks comprised 15% of the antlerless deer taken and 9% of the overall harvest. I feel these are fairly low numbers taking everything into consideration.

Pandy175 brought the link up first in Deer Numbers ...I just gave it new life

Sometimes it's easy for important threads to get lost in the shuffle.

Certainly the results of our reporting and how the IDNR and we as hunters use this information will be even more important as future reports allow for comparison.

I printed out the report just to make it easy to compare to next years.(besides I can' read the darn thing

We'll have a long wait now but I'll be curious how the report combined with surveys will affect 2007/2008 antlerless quotas.

Those are low % but 13,953 still looks like a big number to me. 150,552 seems to be a lot, plus all the deer that wernt reported, not found, or just left lay.

Actually the #'s are way low based on previous history: Hunters killed more deer than reported

Quote from deer biologist Willie Suchy

[ QUOTE ]
Looking at the number of licenses sold for all deer seasons, which started with youth and disabled hunters in September and ran through late seasons in January, and figuring the average success rate puts the deer kill at between 202,000 and 205,000, Suchy said.

The reported number of 150,525 deer represents a 29 percent decline from the year before, when 211,000 deer were estimated to be killed.

"I had expected the success rate to go down because we do have fewer deer," Suchy said. "But I know it didn't go down by 29 percent
