I read Paul Knoxs' article on Hinging. I am working on clear cut in Southern Tier, New York State. I tried hinge cutting today - 2/5/11 - trees just snapped. Should I wait until sap is running?

Sap is not as important as warm weather, when it's extremely cold they are like icicles and just snap off. Wait til you have some warm days and if it's still a problem then try again in late March because different species react differently to hinging.

also, some trees just don't like hinging... From my experience, trying to hinge aspen or poplar trees is not worth the time. I hinged many last year and had 0% live. They did however send up tons of new shoots from the stump and deer are still bedding next to the fallen tops even tho they are not alive! So it isn't all bad! Maybe others on this forum have had better luck with that type of tree, but couldn't seem to make it work.
Box elder and hickory are awesome to hinge if you have some!
