So would a rifle but...Not going to send a comment since I obviously am not the norm in here and what happens happens but I would be happy to be able to use a crossbow late season with my bow tag. Some extra range late season over plots would be great.
There’s no such thing as small late season grain plots with our deer herds.Or ya could just plant smaller plots so ya can shoot all the way across
There is no law that they can pass that is going to change the size of the herds in the areas we are in.I think there is another piece of legislation that will address your deer population.

I've been vocal against all of them. AR pistols in the late season also in that list. Still use either an 870 or CVA Accura. Bout to the point of "can't beat them, join them."I’m just curious how many in here that are against crossbows are now fine with and have 350 legends 450 bushmasters and enjoy using them now that they are legal. Or even the guys that love their smokeless muzzies in a primitive weapons season which put a lot of center fires in second place for accuracy and range?

I’ve never been in favor of any of them but to each there own.I’m just curious how many in here that are against crossbows are now fine with and have 350 legends 450 bushmasters and enjoy using them now that they are legal. I'll take the 220. Tomorrow?Chipterp you are spot on 100%. If crossbows were legalized the main people on this web site would be tripping over each other running to Scheel's to buy the best Ravin crossbow made. Craigslist would be full of used high end bows. Just like the .350's and .450 bushmaster- you can't give away a Savage 220 or 212.
Yes, for sure[...] trying to convert every firearm hunter into a crossbow hunter is gonna turn into a nightmare.
Welcome to the forum and hope you continue to contributeI'm a Kansan. I found this page off Instagram.
For years, they wanted to allow crossbows, post rifle season here. Then some years ago, a couple of our bigger guides got in bed with tenpoint crossbows. They got it passed under "new hunter recruitment". It is as much of a shit show as you're afraid of. Gun hunters get rut with a cross bow, more hunters come archery season. The poaching at night, with a cross bow was a cool,, unintended consequence also. We see piles of ooser's. Every one I see on public, has a crossbow.
I don't mean to be doom and gloom. But you guys are facing what we had. Transferable tags/increasing oos tag/cross bows. It will have an affect, don't fall for their marketing hype. DIsabled, old, absolutely run that cross bow. Otherwise, keep them in rifle season.
Wow, I do not understand the opposition to this at all. Opportunities to hunt in Iowa have only expanded over the last 25 years I’ve been hunting, and the quality of the herd has increased exponentially right along with it. I want to respond to some of the common themes I’ve seen in this thread.Link to the bill: Crossbow
This bill would allow the use of a crossbow in the late split of the archery season. Currently the crossbow is allowed as an alternate method of take under a late muzzle loader tag. The change would be that a crossbow could be used with an archery tag.
The bill was introduced today and already has a subcommittee assigned.

Why "can't" some people hunt with a bow. Too old or physically disabled? Guess what you can already get a permit to use a crossbow if you "can't" hunt with a bow? The reason archery season is as long as it is because its more difficult. A crossbow is more similar to a gun than it is a bow in every facet and they will have a negative effect. Ask anyone from a state who has allowed them.Wow, I do not understand the opposition to this at all. First, the idea that this bill is going to lead to a large increase in the deer harvest just doesn’t hold up to me. Maybe a marginally higher harvest, sure. But the people that just want to blast a deer or two are going to keep doing that during shotgun season. They aren’t going to go sit in the freezing cold and snow to shoot the first deer that walks by with a crossbow - at least not very many will. It will be more “hardcore” people that hold out for mature bucks.
Second, I think we have to ask why the quality of the herd has gone up despite growth in the number of deer seasons and the methods of take. I would guess much of that has to do with the idea of harvesting only mature bucks. So I don’t think adding crossbows to the mix is going to hurt that bad.
Third, and I think most importantly, is the arrogance of bow hunters. Yours is not the only method of hunting. Some people can’t hunt with a bow. Some people just don’t want to. So your endless opposition to anything that hurts *your* odds is tiresome, and quite frankly your problem, not anyone else’s.
I hope they open up the entire archery season for crossbow use.
