Thursday morning I put an arrow in my largest gobbler to date. He weighed 27lbs and sported 1.25 inch spurs and a fat daddy 10 inch bird. The morning did not start out the greatest. I watched the weather to schedule the morning off of work. I woke up around 4:30 and wanted to be out of the house by 4:45. That didnt work i took some stuff out to my truck and went back to get the rest i found my self locked out of my house with no keys and no phone. Damn! After checking all the doors i found my self breaking into my own house. Once in I grabbed my bow, phone, keys etc. double checked for everything and I was gone. That was 5:05 haulin out of town i go hustling to get set up. Thinking i wanted to be set up by now I took the shortest route to the bottom instead of walking out and around the pond I went down the draw below it down to the food plot. Right at the bottom there is one big lone hickory tree with 4 gobblers in it. What the heck the never roost here. They spook so I opted to set up in the freshly frost seeded clover plot and hope for the best. As light approached i could see about a dozen birds along the creek bottom less than 150 yards away. Maybe i will get lucky i thought. Around 5:35 i had about 10 deer running for their lives pass me and go right under the turkeys before i could say what the hezell about 20 more came running by full throttle. Need less to say the toms didnt gobble much. 3 gobbles to be exact and none were from the birds in front of me. I couldnt figure out what spooked the deer but i knew it wasnt me as they ran right to me. the birds started pitching out into the crp field in front of me, no gobbles and no messing around they were on the ground and running. Lucky for me they were coming my direction. The first two toms didnt slow down enough to even range them let alone get a shot. Then some hens came out into the clover and seemed to relax a bit. About five minutes later two times were walking down the mowed path coming from the CRP to the clover. I thought it might happen. The toms saw the hens and went into full strut. I had to close the window on the matrix and open the other side as they struted in circles while the hens walked towards them only five yard from the blind. Window down i ranged the tom at thirty yards, drew back the Hoyt and settled the pin and watched the lumenok glow untill striking the tom. He took three hops and folded in a pile. I supposed with all the bad luck i had i was due for some good luck. Once i picked up the blind and the bird i walked to the top of the hill wear i could see a black chevy crew cab parked in the nieghbors field and some deeks set up along the timber where all the deer came from. I thought to my self what a dummy park in the middle of a field at 5:30 and walk across the open field spooking 30 deer and all the turkeys in the bottom. Lucky for me his mistakes made me successfull. I was set up finally a 5:20 about 20 minutes later than i wanted and i didnt risk setting up the pretty boy I left the deeks in the blind and just winged it. Im going to try and figure out how to post pics.
