Ice Storm !

For those of us with property south of I-80, another Ice Storm is on the way Thurs night. Before I moved out here I wrote the Nat Weahter Service in DesMoines and asked if Freezing Rain Storms were a problem down here. Not really,,they said,,That was usually a problem further south, like down in MO. Well, since I have moved here there has been a major Ice Storm, at least once each winter. Climate Change,,G.W. whatever you want to call it, this is geting old! Could be up to an inch of ice. Gentlemen, Start your genrators.Let us pray not...

Just makes it easier to shoot the deer they can't run as fast. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
Welcome to IOWA.

We just try to keep "life" interesting here in Iowa...

Rural water and a nice gas fireplace can get a fella by with no "juice" for a bit...

Hang in there...spring will be here before you know it... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Water is my big hang up. We fill 5 gallon buckets of water so we can "flush" but we end up going to the fitness center to shower. I sure hope it doesn't happen again this year.

You have a well?? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

I do have a generator, so I just plug our "on demand" gas hot water heater into that for a nice hot shower! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Just remember to check the gas in the generator first... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I235 looked like a car boneyard with yesterday's little skiff. Can't imagine what a half inch of ice would do. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Well, I have a well and it is a well of a well! Around 300 feet of fun. Hope to God I never have any pump problems. I can't imagine the cost of pulling that much pipe. I'd like rural water, but with RW comes huge hog confinement "farms".

I tried to make my own rural water. I laid a hose from the Solon Fire Station to my house, but a fella about three miles down the road from me kept cutting the hose when he mowed his ditch.

Are your water heaters "point of use"? How do they work? Gas and electric? I've been thinking about this for a long time. It kills me to pay for storage of hot water.

I think mine is a Bosch, not cheap by any means but neither is paying to "heat" water 24-7 for a lifetime! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Tankless Water Heaters

Some aren't too expensive but I need to vent mine via a small exhuast fan (built in the unit) versus one that vents straight up thru a roof) so it was like 800 bucks I think.

Turn on the water, it starts and take seconds for the hot water to reach the faucet (any hot water heater has to push cold water thru the line first anyway)

You never run out of hot water...even in an ice storm /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Don't want to sound too down on Iowa. One thing I do like about it further south,,spring does come quicker,,but then,,,come the Chiggers! Don't pay any attention to me, I am naturally a Meloncholy temperment. See the glass half empty instead of half full kinda guy.

Well if you want something to whine about it is -22 here this morning. No ice storms here... just snow on the ground for six months out of the year.

Temps at zero or below. severel inches of snow on the ground with more on the way. I absolutely love it! The deer are pounding the alfalfa and the muzzleloader is waiting for that big ol buck to step out. Heck, I wait all year for this !

We get another major ice storm like last year and they'll be shed out before you know it like they did last year.

For those in Minn and other Northern areas, I know how winters drag on. I lived near the Mackinaw Bridge for 25 yrs, but snow you can deal with. An inch of ice on everything and you have roads impassible, power lines down, beautiful trees snapped, and a crust on the snow that is hard on wildlife. Only bright spot for southern IA and MO, is that thawing comes more frequently.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">A MIXTURE OF SNOW AND SLEET WILL BEGIN THIS EVENING AND RAPIDLY
CHANGE OVER TO FREEZING RAIN. ICE ACCUMULATIONS RANGING FROM ONE
<span style='font-size: 11pt'>HALF TO THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH </span>ARE EXPECTED. THE HEAVIER ICE
ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 80. THERE IS A
POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS LATE TONIGHT...WHICH WOULD
RESULT IN PERIODS OF HEAVY SLEET AND ICE ACCUMULATIONS.

THE ICE WILL BRIEFLY CHANGE OVER TO ALL RAIN LATE TONIGHT AS
TEMPERATURES RISE TO NEAR FREEZING...ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF
INTERSTATE 80. HOWEVER...IT WILL CHANGE BACK TO FREEZING RAIN AND
EVENTUALLY SNOW DURING THE FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE. ONLY MINOR SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED BEFORE THE STORM LEAVES THE AREA FRIDAY
MORNING.

THE PROBABILITY OF EXTENDED POWER FAILURES IS HIGH WITH THIS
STORM.
LIGHT WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO TO INCREASE TO 10 TO 20 MPH
FOR A TIME FRIDAY MORNING.

AN ICE STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF ONE-
QUARTER INCH OR MORE ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. THIS WILL MAKE
TRAVEL VERY DANGEROUS HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. TRAVEL ONLY IN AN
EMERGENCY AND TAKE YOUR WINTER SURVIVAL KIT. ICE ACCUMULATIONS
AND WINDS WILL LIKELY LEAD TO FALLING TREE BRANCHES...SNAPPED
POWER LINES AND LOSS OF POWER.

It's heading your way! It's currently 12 degrees, thundering, lightening, and sleeting like a hail storm here. When this stops, they say we can expect up to 5 inches of snow on top of it. This is going to suck.

Hang in there. It WON"T suck as bad as our ice storm last Dec.in Tulsa. Over 2" of ice. 600,000 without power for weeks. Here's a few pix of my yard.

My Xmas moose and bear were killed by this tree. The deer made it.

Here's our farm a week later. The timber in the background was so thick you couldn't see thru it. We are still cutting timber a year later. Went thru 7 chains and a chainsaw so far.
