Is anybody old enough to remember

about 20 years ago in the IOWA CONSERVATIONIST magazine, where the IA CONSERVATION COMMISSION advised outdoors man to shoot a cat if it was a mile from a farm house? The story went on to tell why they recommended this action by quoting a University of Wisconsin study that showed that domestic cats were harder on game, non game animals, and songbirds, than ALL other predators combined. The study went on to state that cats kill for fun, where natural predators only kill for necessity. I wonder what the states' stance is on this subject now?

On a similar note, I can remember being a kid and if we had a sick animal or nuisance animal on the farm, Dad or Grandpa shot it. There was no taking the sick animal to be put to sleep at the vet, and if an animal, such as a dog was chasing the cattle, it got shot. I suppose in todays' day and age, this would bring criminal charges against you for not taking the animal to the vet to be put to sleep, or for bothering your cattle?

The Bowhunter Observation Report that the Iowa DNR sends out every fall for select hunters to fill out and return ask how many feral cats the bowhunter saw while hunting. :)

I 100% agree that cats are the worst predator out there. Just by watching them sneak around the woods its easy to see why. I have never shot one, but never had one close enough with a bow. I did one time have my pet cat follow me to the tree back when I was 14 and the dang thing climbed up in my stand and sat on my lap all morning. It was pretty wierd, but what I did learn from it is people can't hear worth a crap, which is no suprise. That thing would know a deer was coming a good 5 minutes before I would it was amazing.

back when i was in high school, i read in iowa game and fish, that cats kill more pheasants per year, than hunters do.

that article changed my life.....and the lives of ALOT of cats

We used to take a couple days and go "ditch lion" hunting every fall.

We sent quite a few of them to their maker. Never regretted it.

Nope, never done that.

;)

When I was much younger, my best friend had a Weimraner that wanted to kill anything with a heartbeat. We "trained" it so that all we had to do was hiss, slow down the vehicle, open the door and she solved the "problem", never had to waste a shell.:way:

2 years ago I put a great bowshot on a ditch tiger broadside at 25 yards, I couldn't have placed it any better. If only I could shoot deer with that sort of accuracy!

A buddy and I used to run traps on Lake Red Rock with a boat and caught several cats miles from nowhere. We ran all connibear sets so no catch and release.

In regards to the trophy room on the site link, I'd be kind of embarrassed to have my picture taken with a cat and my gun or bow, seriously, its a cat!

That article shows exactly why I never attempt to kill a cat or dog while hunting. I wonder how many non hunters became anti hunters from that one incident.

I read a simialer artical somewhere that said house cats were #1 predator of songbirds.
S.S.S. like mentioned above. :)
